The block is cast iron, the heads aluminum.

It's based on the 4.7.

That brings up a question. Should I remove paint from areas where there is a seal? For instance, when I install the water pump should I remove the paint around where the seal is?

I would say yes any mating surface between parts is best not painted. Never scrap aluminum its too soft chemicals only for removal.

Haynes doesn't say anything about putting sealant on the valve covers. Also doesn't give the tightening order for the valve cover bolts.

Do i need sealant if everything is properly cleaned?

Is there a tightening sequence?

usualy no sealant is used on the valve cover just use a simple X patern or common sense its not too important just tighten down all bolts evenly.

Just dont over tighten them or you could worp the cover

Not sure on the OHV motors, but there should be a cork gasket. No sealant. criss-cross pattern, usually hand tight (no ratchet, spin the socket on an extension) plus 1/4 turn.

OK, On the top of the engine, under the intake manifold in the rear are three holes. 2 are for the dipstick. What is the other one?

This is a guess

Its a bolt hole that holds down one or both dipsticks.
