Default 2002 Dodge Dakota busted head?

Can anyone help me with this? Looks like at least a head replacement. What happened and what is the remedy? 4.7 engine.

Front right cylinder #2. You probably dropped a valve seat. It's a common problem on the 4.7, especially if it has ever gotten hot.

Yup, new head.

Thanks 00DakDan. I pulled the busted pieces from #2 and put the valve cover back on. My son is currently driving it with the check engine light on. Will this cause further damage if not fixed right away? Also, would an average cost to replace the head be around $1000? Anybody?

What code is the check engine light showing? Some can cause additional damage.

Is the rocker working normally, sitting solidly on the broken mount? You might get away with driving it. I'd be cautious though. If it was the valve seat they sometimes pop back into position but it won't stay forever.

removed the rocker and piece it sits on. Not sure what the code is but will check. Oil fouled plug on #2 I believe may be causing the light.

I'm suspecting a misfire on #2.

Pull the head.

Absolutely Right, misfire on #2. Because the truck is in use six days a week, do you know if it can run ok for awhile without damage to the engine being without the lifter and rocker?(removed them) I believe the piston may be at the halfway position if that makes any difference.

The piston is going to be moving any time the engine is running. The intake valve won't open but the exhaust will. Basically it won't be doing anything but who's to say if there is anything in the cylinder doing damage.

What does the spark plug look like? Is it intact or damaged from a "hit."

I don't think I would be driving it with a dead cylinder, and removed parts. Isn't there an oil passage that NEEDS that lifter in there to maintain oil pressure?

That, and spraying gas into that cylinder, and NOT burning it, is going to wash down the cylinder walls.... and possibly lead to excessive bore/ring wear.
