Default Tranny or TC ?

Hey everyone. I have a 99 Dakota and the guy before me said his buddy rebuilt the transfer case and then said that the transmission was hooped. I just started it up and tried moving it just to see what would happen and there is a grinding whirring noise coming from the transfer case. Not the transmission. And when I first put it into drive it moved forward an inch or two before the grinding whirring noise. Do you think that his buddy maybe screwed up on his "rebuild"? Or is it the tranny? Hope someone can help. Please.

What engine/trans/t-case??

Sounds travel REALLY well thru the driveline..... It may be the trans, it may be the t-case.... If you put the truck in park, does it stay put?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it stays put whilst in park. Also, I had a buddy put it into gear while I was under the truck, so I pin pointed the sound to the front part of the T C.

Wonder if the tailshaft of the trans doesn't stick far enough into the t-case...

Why did he rebuild the t-case in the first place?

I believe that he rebuilt it because the truck wouldn't move.

Guess it wasn't the transfer case then, was it?

Drop the trans pan, see what you find.

Wonder if the splines are stripped out on the transmission output/transfer input.
