Default drive line shudder?

2004 SLT Club Cab
4x4
3.7L
auto trans

driving a long, when i approach 30mph i get a short shudder like hitting an interrupted rumble strip along a yellow center line. it goes away and then i get it again just about 33-34mph and again coming up to 40mph

ive had the tires balanced and rotated; the "new" fronts are nice and have even tread.

im wondering what to look at next before taking it to a shop. im not super talented when it comes to trouble shooting...

Do you feel the shudder thru the seat, or the steering wheel?

That's probably something in the rear then. How are the U-joints?

well, i did a filter and complete fluid change (twice in case there was some gunk someplace) and added some friction modifier "designed" to help eliminate shudder...

it SEEMs to be minimized from what it was but i dont have but 6-8 miles on it since changing out the fluid. i spoke with a local mechanic about it and they seem to think (of course, its CASH) that the converter is going bad or the whole trans needs rebuilt...

i dont have the time or the place to replace a converter or drop the transmission for repair or replacement. Id LIKE to know with some reasonable expectation that before i go through another procedure, at considerable more cost than just fluid and a filter, that i will be fixing the issue...

has anyone got any more insight?

I'd also suspect the converter. The converter clutch may be getting weak and not fully engaging.
