Default Rear swap out/#s

I havent had the time to set up rear preload, backlash,,markings, an all on the 01 2wd 3.9.
If i were to swap it out for a identicle at the junkyard ,i saw a few days ago, how would i identify the match?
The vin...or # of holes on differential cover? I have 8.25 with 10 hole cover.
Would a vin lookup be the best way to match up?
What else is important on the swap an whats the newest year I can still use..
Maybe theres a stamp on it too that helps .
Thanks

The easiest way would be to look for the build sheet in the vehicle. Any tags on the differential would likely be missing.
The 8.25 or 9.25 will fit your frame. The driveshafts can differ though - even if it's from another 8.25.

The mounts differ on 2wd and 4wd. Up until 2004 should be identical. The brakes can vary as well - some were drum and some were disk.

Default Interchangable differential

Is a 98 Ram 1500 differential interchangable with a 00 Durango?

I did see a tag on it.Ill try to get tbe #s .
Where is the build sheet ?
I will look for the similar setup 8.25 base with the same mounts .
A 10 bolt diff on 2wd base model should match up.. I wasnt sure if internal set up differed .

The 8.25 came with two ratios, 3.55 for the auto and 3.23 for the manual. The 9.25 came with three ratios, 3.23 for manual, 3.55 for automatic, 3.92 was optional.

8.25 and 9.25 are different driveshaft length (9.25 pinion sticks out a half inch further)

8.25 "should" be same pinion flange position for both auto and manual - Just make sure you get the right drive type. Some years used a U-joint and some used a companion flange.

2wd is spring under axle, 4wd is spring over axle

I think the full size truck axles will be wider. Durango axles should be very close, if not exactly the same.
