Default 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT suspension rebuild

I'm gathering parts and prepping for overhauling the suspension on my old truck. I'm ordering some new springs for all four corners. In addition, I'm getting mounting hardware for the leaf springs. However, I need to know if I have the 8-1/4 or 9 -1/4 axle to get the right parts. How can I tell what I have? It's a rear wheel drive, standard cab, long bed with a 318 Magnum, automatic transmission.

With the 318 probably 9.25, but, just to make sure, run your VIN here, that should tell ya what ya got.

There are 12 bolts on the 9.25" and 10 bolts on the 8.25" cover.

That's an awesome tool. Unfortunately, the database only goes back through 1998 - mine's a '97.

Thanks 00DakDan! I think I knew this at one point. This brain of mine has always been a little leaky, but now the holes are getting bigger!

Try it anyway. Be sure and type in letters in caps. It worked for my 96.

I have Energy Suspension bushings in hand and KYB Gas-A-Just shocks for all 4 corners. In addition, I have new rear wheel bearings and brakes to install. While changing the bearings, the differential fluid will be changed and resealed. The fill plug has been leaking a little, so I have a new one as well.

Two things have this project on hold:
  • I ordered a full set of springs and mounting hardware from Eaton Detroit Springs. They should ship next week. Some of the shackle bolts hadn't delivered to the supplier yet.
  • I usually have a three day weekend, but we are short a man right now and I am working an extra shift. I work nightshift as well, so that really only gives me a day and a half to wrench on the vehicles. I don't feel comfortable getting into the front bushing replacement with this short of a time frame. Right now, this truck is my daily driver.
I will also try my hand at a string alignment - can't hurt and trackers do these all the time with great accuracy.

IIRC the front and rear track widths are 2" apart - 1" per side. So the string method may not work. As mentioned. 8.25 is a 10-bolt oval cover and 9.25 is a 12-bolt octagonal cover. Pulling the leaf springs is easy. for the front, I highly suggest an internal spring compressor. They're a female dog in heat.

Just saw that you are a DFWite. I am generally more than busy, but let me know if you need any help. I'm over here on the west side and have learned these trucks better than myself.
