Default Weird noise

ok i have a 1997 dakota sport 5.2 L and when i put it in 4 hi or 4 lo and go to drive there is a lound clunking soudn that is continous when im on the gas hard.. if i drive slowly it doesnt do it as much.. it does it more with the wheel turned.... this is a 5 speed truck.... the sound is really loud and i was wondering if it would be chain slip in the transfercase or if anyone had any other idea to what it could be... thanks

when in 4 wheel drive on any truck you should avoid turning the wheels very far, you get hydraulic lock or something in the power steering system. im not sure if thats the right name for it but essentially your power steering has to fight the 4x4 system when the wheels are turned all the way in either direction. it can really bog down your motor and cause noises/jumping.

if your shifter is jumping up and down that is a good indicatation that the tranny mounts are bad.

yea im pretty sure it is bad but ive called every where looking for a new one but no one has a listing for a 97 dakota v8 5 speed 4x4... also the sound kins sound like somthing it outta round cause it will bang stop bang stop bang stop.... buit when im going faster in my truck it seems to be fine... is there anyway it could be the chain in the transfer case or is that somthng that just either works or doesnt work? im new to the whole 4x4 thing so im not sure thanks
