2005 Dodge Durango Hemi 5.7L 4LO problem ?
I installed a TCM rebuilt and was extremely happy that it appeared that I had resolved my problem I got nine months of of it and was glad to have my mean machine back. That however is the illusion, Dodge does'nt make anything but whimpy, no one cares after they are sold vehicle.
Too many people are having similar problems the the 4 wheel Hi /Lo switching system automatically switching down and into w wheel LO mode regardless of the speed you are traveling on the highway. It is dangereous to drive and irresponsible to
Dodge not to find a resolution to this issue. DODGE STINKS!
I replaced the TCM in December and the autoswitch to 4LO stopped occuring until August when the icon warning light came on warning about 4.0 automatically swithing to 4.0 Lo without warning. Only way to drive is to unconnect TCM cover plate and drive without it.
These people never do the right thing unless someone with a bigger stick comes along and threatenes to beat them across the forehead.
Oh, I was getting my money ready to buy a Chrysler 300S but not in this life time. I am going back to the models of my youth.

Eh, no car is perfect. Ask the earlly Acura TL owners how they feel about Acura after burning through 2-3 transmissions before 100k miles. I got 90k miles on my 2007 with no major issues.
I found it at a local auto parts store. Good Luck!
I am new to the forum, however I have been having the same issues with my 2004 model. Funny thing though, my problems did not start until chrysler sent out a recall to have the instrument cluster "reprogrammed". After that, it has been intermittent and sometimes will take months before it does it. I have done some research on Mitchel's on demand software and have found that the Front control module and the instrument cluster have to communicate properly for all this electronic gadgetry to work properly. The transfer case control **** sends its signals to the Instrument cluster first and then on to the Front control module. I have unhooked the switch and the problem remains. The interesting thing is that some of you say the problem happens when the key is removed and doors are locked. I have a guy that I work with that worked for Mitsubishi for years and he stated that Chrysler's software at times had glitches in them that would effect all computers on the vehicle. Has anyone questioned the software that are programmed into thes things at all. I am going to check with my dealer contact about this being a possibility. I will keep you informed. Thanks for all the good posts!
My wifes Durango has started the 4lo issue. I think I am first going to try and do the disconnect. I really am unsure about replacing the TCM dishing out all that money to just maybe fix the vehicle. Seeing some of the more recent posts about how the problem can arise again after replacing the TCM. To all the others having this frustrating issue I am sorry. I found a form on safercar.gov and I thought maybe this is a good route to try and bring the issue to Chrysler's attention. Therefore, please help yourselves and others click the following link and dedicate a few moments of your time to fill out the form. https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm
I having the same problem with ours. The light has been off and on for the past three weeks and yesterday was the first day was the first day it went into 4LO. I disconnected the TCM and we are good to go until the snow comes. I think I'll replace the TCM first and see what happens.
Thanks to all who have posted here with suggestions...very helpful.

2005 Black Durango Limited, Hemi, AWD
For what its worth, I recently had the Transfer Case Motor or the sensor inside it go bad and it didn't act up for a while just the SVC 4wd light came on and could not use the shift switch. It finally acted up about 4 months later and about 80 miles from home. It shifted into "Towing Neutral" while going 60mph on cruise control. I could not get it to go back into AWD or any other gear for the life of me. Thank God for AAA plus membership, Tow truck guy said it would have been a $475 tow. I had a snowmobile trailer on the back too.
My mechanic said when he changed the transfer case motor, he tapped on the old one with a screw driver before removing it and he could here it changing gears.
After the remanufactured one was installed, the problem has not come back. I have driven about 1000 miles since the install. Cost was $149 for the part from Napa and labor was $75.
Its a beautiful truck that otherwise runs and drives great, but I think I will sell it while everything is going good.

Thanks to members "bham" and others that followed his suggestions after much trial and error for posting the part numbers for the correct fix on the problem. I just recently bought a 2005 limited with the 5.7 Hemi on Saturday afternoon and had the 4x4 service light and the 4 lo light come on AFTER the dealership that sold it to me closed for the weekend...
Needless to say I'm less than thrilled that this issue with the 4x4 not only managed to stay under wraps even on the test drive, but I also exercised the 4 lock and 4lo without any service lights coming on.
Thank you all very much for sharing information such as possible costs, correct part numbers and the order in which to attempt the fix if DIY becomes necessary.
