Default Knock on Wood

Oh my god! I decided to replace the TCM after a couple of you brave souls tried it first. I paid $153.85 (included a $20.00 plus tax core charge) and $137.64 for a mechanic to put it in and get an inspection and emissions test. So far everything works.

I had disconnected the TCM cable about a year ago, and then reconnected it in June 2011 and it immediately started acting up by slipping into 4lo. So I unplugged it again until yesterday when I picked up a TCM (rebuilt) and had it installed. Today it is like a miracle.

My wife keeps laughing at me because I keep going outside to start my Durango and backup it up to make sure it is still fixed.

You cannot believe how nice it is to have a car that I don't have to worry about driving anymore.

The rebuilt part number is 48-306 which is the same as the Dodge or Chrystler part number 5143477AA.

Good luck to the rest of you.

Thanks to you and another I had the TCM installed yesterday. It worked. I just can't believe it. It has been hell not knowing what to do. Thanks for being the leader.

I have the same problem with my 05 Durango Ltd. It started acting up just after Thanksgiving and has done it a few more times. It was recommended that I take it to a local transmission shop that I have had good luck with before, but once I found this post, I knew their offer to rebuild the transfer case was going to do nothing to fix the problem. My question is if the transfer case motor does not have a control module in it, according to what I was told, how would replacing the motor fix the problem?

The problem doesn' yield reason so the solution won't either. After replacing the TCM I feel like I have a new and dependable Durango. When I took the TCM to the mechanic and asked him to put it put it in, I told him the story and he looked at me like I was crazy. Well it worked for me and several other blog members so I don't car how I look.

Default almost there...

Thanks. The TCM is, hopefully, coming in today. They closed the freeway 2 nights ago, so had to wait one more day. While I was leaving the parts store, empty handed, it shifted into 4Lo again. I saw no indication on the dash that is had done so, but could not go with the wheel turned. As with some of these posts, I played with the selector **** and the lights went back and forth, but it stayed in 4Lo. I ended up having to just force it to go and it went back into AWD. Having done that at least 4 times, I don't know what damage I have done to the transfer case, but the salvaged transfer case (with 18k miles on it) came in from Califormia, yesterday, and I will hang onto that, just in case it is needed as well. I had actually called Carbone, who rebuilt the TCM, and they sent me a detailed trouble shooting protocol to test the wiring to see if it was the control module. I called the mechanic with that information and he accessed a mechanics message board on this very issue and out of some 19 mechanics who posted solutions, only one replaced the control module to solve the problem. The rest replaced the TCM, which he thought was the way to go, so I will go get it and take it over to him so I can pick up the transfer case and hopefully return with some peace of mind. Thanks, again.

TCM is in and so far so good. It was happening alot more often, so the next 2 days will tell, before we head out of town for a 2 1/2 hour drive for Christmas. When the mechanic pulled it into his shop it was clicking like crazy. I laughed when he pulled the part out and it had Made in China on it!! His comment was, well there's your problem! He charged me $40 to put it in and I was fine with that.

Crap, it did not work. Got in it, tonight, to go see a friend, and the SRV4WD light came on. Stayed on even after I turned off the motor a few times. Got back in to come home, and the light was gone... yah! Went thru the alley behind my house to check out the 4WD, and everything seemed to work. Is 4Lo supposed to be flashing when selected? Got to the end of the ally, and switched back to AWD. Turned the wheel hard left and there goes that feeling again. Wheels won't move and I'm stuck.

Damn, I am so disappointed for you. The first thought that comes to my mind is that maybe you installed a re-manufactured TCM and maybe it wasn't good??

I don't know except that if I was in your place I would get another one and try it again. Please check the part numbers from my last post.

Mine is still running like it should always have run.

Good Luck

They are on the Internet but I just went to a local (Salt Lake City, Utah) autoparts store and they had it in inventory.
