2005 Dodge Durango Hemi 5.7L 4LO problem ?
My 2005 Durango 5.7 Hemi has also had the same 4Lo problems as mentioned. It went into the shop on September 23, 2010 waiting on a power distribution center and front control module. The parts came in to my dealer on November 8, 2010. I picked it up on November 9, 2010. Thursday November 11, 2010 it acted up again and 4Lo locked in. Had to have it towed. Today, November 12, 2010 my dealership could not find anything wrong. No codes came up!!!!! Wow ! What to do??? Drive it and risk tearing something up or even risk the safety of driver and passengers! I just spend 1200.00 bucks to fix nothing! If anyone had their problem resolved, please let me know. I have three Dodge vehicles sitting in my drive and this Durango is by far been nothing but trouble!!! Thanks and good luck to the rest of you.
Please post the part numbers of the parts they replaced for you so we can avoid them. Thanks
I noticed the parts I had replaced were listed in an earlier posting. The parts are: Module-Front Control #56040661AL (810.00) and Block # 4692013AD (273.80). Hope this helps someone from getting taken to the cleaners!
Everyone:
It is a fact that a dead or dying battery can make our Durangos do very weird electrical things. Have the battery load tested, and if it is the least bit flaky, replace it as a PM and to rule out any future issues.
That being said, I have not yet read where these T case issues have been traced to a battery issue.
Don't believe the dash switch could make it be squirrelly. Most of the T case issues I have read about were eventually remedied by a new TCCM or transfer case control module (for the Gen 1 D's anyway).
The Gen 2 Durango is an entirely different beast from what I can see. Darned near every control unit it a module of its own that "communicates" with the other ones.

Just started having the same issues with an 05 durango 5.7. Dealer replaced FCM module (same part number as given above) on the advice of Chrysler. Within 5 miles of the dealership the 4LO light started coming on again. Back it went. Has anyone had a resolution to this yet? What obligation do you think Chrysler or the dealer has in misdiagnosing the problem. Into it for $1200 so far. I believe parts stores wont take back electronics, but should the dealership be able to return the FCM to Chrysler and put the old on back (if they still have it). I was told that the FCM had to be flashed for the specific model of Durango and therefore can't be returned, implying that it can only be flashed once?
Hello RichEKelly,
What you described in your post is the exact issue I had. My Durango went into the shop September 23, 2010 and stayed there until the power distribution box and the pcm came in. On November 8, 2010 the parts arrived and were installed. Two days later, same problem!!!! Back in the shop on November 10, 2010. It stayed in the shop until I picked it up on November 30, 2010. During its last stay, the tech determined that it was the transfer case motor shorting out. He installed new motor and " knock on wood" it hasn't acted up yet. My total bill for everything from September 23 until November 30 was $1602.00. On November 10, 2010, I wrote a letter to Chrysler Customer Care concerning my issues and I also enclosed my bill and stated that I felt that these issues were not resolved and that I felt Chrysler should step up and cover some if not all of the costs. I have not gotten any reply yet. Within the next couple of days I will write another letter and enclose my transfer case motor bill also. I'm sure they won't agree with me but it's worth a try. If any new issues arise with this 4lo problem, I will definately post to you all. Thanks and Good luck!!!

Thanks for the reply. The Dodge repair shop came back suggesting to replace the transfer case motor at $480. It appears that several others have had the transfer case motor replaced without success, so I am hesitant.
I have a 2005 AWD Durango and I'm having the exact same 4LO, random clicking noise, 4WD engaging on it's own problems. It's been doing this for about 2 months and it's really getting to be a problem. I took it to a dealer and they are clueless. The warranty has expired and I'm hesitant to put any money into this vehicle unles I'm pretty confident that it will fix the problem. I'm tempted to replace the transfer case motor myself this weekend but would really like to know if anyone has had success by doing this. QUESTION: Does anyone know how to disengage the 4WD???? I want to basically make it a 2WD until I fix this issue. I've read where some people have had their 4WD disabled either by pulling a fuse or unplugging it. Can someone tell me how I go about doing this? Thanks!
Hello all,
Just wanted to let everyone know that I am now on day 14 with my 2005 Durango and no problems with the 4Lo wanting to try to engage. My Durango was in the shop two separate occasions for a total of 68 days and a total bill of just over $1600.00. Fortunately, I was able to get quite a reduction on the labor and parts charges. Don't know whether it was because I have been a long time customer or if they felt bad because it took the techs so long to figure things out. I did alot of communicating with my salesman, parts and service managers as well as the owner of the dealership. There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't either call one of them or stop in at the dealership on my way home. As far as Chrysler Corp, well, I am still working on them. Hard to convince when my Durango is out of warranty!!! If anything new arises, I will certainly post to all of you. Thanks and Happy Holidays!!!

I had the dealer go ahead and replace the transfer case motor. As of about 150 mi later no more problems with the 4WD system. The service manager at the garage said that he beleived one of the parts caused the other to fail, though I wasn't sure which he beleived caused the other. It seems though the manufacturer response is to replace the FCM first and then the transfer case motor if required. I beleive this is because the first fault code that comes up is for the FCM module. The fault for the transfer case motor didn't show up until the FCM was replaced, presumably because if the FCM has failed it can't relay any downstream faults (speculation on my part). It seems as though all the previous posts the transfer case motor did have to be replaced.
