Know this is an old thread but did everyone with problems get this resolved completely? Is just replacing the transfer case motor fixing the problem? This started on the wife’s 2005 D about a month ago. Also lucky to have the gas over flow/can’t fill problem that has no concrete resolution either. Thinking it is time to throw the towel in and get rid of the D.

Add me to the list as well - same problem started with my 2005 D about 4 weeks ago too. Is it the transfer case motor or something else?

Hello all, especially leachdr and TheTigs. First of all I want to start off by saying that my 05 Durango has not had any 4x4 issues since it came out of the shop on November 30, 2010. By reading my other posts you can see what all I went through to get my problem resolved. I had power dist. center and front control module replaced after a lengthy back order wait. No luck in outcome so they replaced transfer case motor and so far all is good! Leachdr, your gas overflow trouble is a recall issue. I had same problem when I first purchased my Durango. My dealership(Service Manager) supposedly didn't know about the recall until I printed the info out and presented it to them. I had filler tube as well as tank replaced at no cost to me. No more problems with this! Search 2005 Dodge Durango recalls and read about it. Anything else, just ask. I'll be glad to answer what I can!

Sorry leachdr but I failed to mention that my Durango WAS out of warranty when I had the recall issued fixed!

Angry Durango 4Wd

To all,
I have had the same 4wd issues as everyone else. Mine jumped into 4lo while my wife was driving, and the internals of the case were turned into mush. My vehicle was still under the powertrain warranty at the time. The local dealership sent my transfer case to Jasper Engineering to be rebuilt along with a new transfer case motor. The isssue reappeared as I was driving it off of the lot. The dealership removed the electronic motor, and that is where we are at now. They think that I need to have the front control module and power distribution center replaced, but at my cost. So for now, the transfer case motor sits on a shelf in my garage and the Service 4wd light is on.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately our 05 is outside the recall on the fueling issue. We’ve got over 160K on the D and the problems are adding up so it’s time to trade it in. Just hope the phantom switching into 4lo while parked doesn’t happen during trade-in inspection!

Thank you bham and everyone else. Took mine in and had mechanic put scan on it and it is coming up as Transfer Case Motor due to low voltage. He double checked some research to make sure nothing else was coming up through any TSB's, etc. Today he called and confirmed it is the TCM. Will be putting it in next week, hopefully that solves it. I've been fortunate that at this point it is only tripping the Service 4WD light intermittently and has only triggered 4LO once for less than a couple of seconds. I'll keep you posted.

I have the 05 adventurer with about 92000 on it and i too am having the same problem. Its not allthe time. It happened on e when going backwards and once forwards. It makes it hard to steer and sometimes jumps. I have had it in 4 lock once in the winter due to a pretty bad snow storm. What could this mess be?
