Default Synthetic motor oils

I'm thinking about changing my oil to synthetic, is it a good idea?

Depends on several things if it is worth it or not.

Other good oils (synthetics), in this order:

Redline
Pennzoil Platinum
AMSOil
Mobil1
Royal Purple

If your car has over 70k miles on it or so, and do a lot of short-distance driving, I suggest you do some research before you go full synthetic. Running conventional oil under heavier driving conditions for a long time, then switching to synthetic can cause your seals/gaskets to start leaking, etc. Research it a bit more and you'll find much more detailed explanations of why.

However if the above does not apply to you, then using synthetic is a great choice for many reasons.

Simply put, they clean better and can loosen gunk up that has kept a seal/gasket from leaking. There is more to it though.

On mine, because it had a small leak when I bought it, I am just going to stick with Valvoline 5W-30 Synthetic Blend High Mileage. Get a bit of synthetic oil and some extra seal/gasket conditioners too. Wal-Mart has the 5 quart container for $14.

As for full Synthetic, Royal Purple for me!
