Engine mounts?
i had this exact problem man... check this out
you have a mount on the bottom of your engine, it bolts to your engine then goes to the frame, like an arm, iono maybe a audi shock absorbers of some kind? its on the passenger side, ok anyways, on the end of the arm that attaches to the subframe, it simply slipped off the rubber mount.. therefore it was metal to metal clunking.. check that out and see if thats whats going on.. its easy to fix, but your problem sounds exactly what was going on with mine.. gl big guy

Drewtiss, yea I saw that post before. I do not have that setup on my neon. I'm still looking for the issue. Lower control arms will be re-bushed next. Re-doing the front sway bar bushings quieted it for a little while, so i figure I'm getting closer. Thanks for the input!

Lower control arms will make a crap load of noise if the bushings are bad. I replaced mine that were completely torn when I dropped the transmission. I think either my transmission mount or that pivot mount is out now, yay :\
