Hi,

If you still have any kind of warrantee with the dealer....bring it in....this is a bad sign.
My '03 Neon did the same thing....then later that day...my transmission went out totally.

My son has a 2003 Neon. Transmision blew on Christmas day..Dealer wants $3,000 for a car that has a $1,700 trade in value...Not sure if its worth it to fix, although his car is in new like condition. Babies it...any way, found a 2002 Trani and was wondering if it would fit?

It will fit, but it won't work.

WTF is up with these dealers wanting $3000+ to replace a trans. it costs less than $300 in parts total to rebuild one (wholesale prices) unless the hard parts are destroyed. Total labor to R&R&R is under 10hrs. So basically they are $200-$250/hr plus parts. There are many local quality transmission shops that will provide better price, better quality. My local trans shop saved a friend over $1800 from dealer price on a 2000 1500 4x4. And this trans had a ton of top quality improvements. The dealer trans just comes from a Chrysler reman center (sometimes Jasper) and there are no improvements like a shift kit.

I got quoted in the ballpark of $2000 to $3000 from actual transmission repair shops to rebuild my transmission. The 03+ transmissions are a different breed from previous years.

03 auto trans is nothing special from any other year. It's just an A604/41TE which has been around since 1989. Trans shops wanting $2000-$3000 for the SAME trans as a 1990 dynasty, spirit, minivan... well they are just nuts. Infact, I'll bet the shops wouldnt charge that kind of price on these vehicles. Yet the trans is exactly the same, just the bellhousing is different.

The 03+ transmissions are completely electronically controlled for starters. Everything about the transmission's performance is controlled from a separate transmission computer. Yes, the transmission has it's own computer. The internals may be similar (quite possibly identical), but there is much more to them than the previous ones. Once the transmission is rebuilt, they also require computer programming and relearn procedures performed via the DRBIII scanner tool (or whatever it is Dodge calls it). You can't simply tear one down, completely rebuild it and toss it back into the car. You put in an 02 or earlier transmission in place of an 03+, you'll have problems. Now, if you replace the harness and computer, etc., fine. Is the price still outrageous? Yes.

The transmission in an 03 is nothing different than any other 604/t1TE trans. They ALL use a transmission computer and are completely electronically controlled, they all have an input and output speed sensor and a transmission range sensor. All that stuff you're babbling about programming etc is listed for ALL 604/41te and 606/42le transmissions. and basically a lot of bs. But your right about one thing... 'YOU' can't simply tear one down, completely rebuild it and toss it back into the car. But anyone that's ever rebuilt a 604 minivan trans sure can, because it's the SAME trans (the only differences are the case/bell housing and range sensor ---depending on what year you want to compare) this trans is conceptually no different than ALL other 41TE transmissions since 1989
