I know that it is sending out a code in reference to the catalytic converter and I am thinking that it may possible need to be replaced, pretty upset over that....However, it is also recently losing an awful lot of power....The power loss increases as the drive continues. It will take about a quarter mile before it has trouble picking up speeds over low gears of first and second.....It is an automatic, by the way.

You want this section. Welcome to DF!

If it's whining about the cat, and you are losing power, chances are real good the two problems are related. A clogged cat WILL rob you of power, and if it gets bad enough, the engine won't even run. Any exhaust shop should be able to pressure test your exhaust.... that will tell you if the cat is bad.

Either O2 sensor or converter. I'd start with the cheaper of the two first.

Mieneke and Midas converters are cheap.

Why are you "pretty upset" that a 15 year old car needs a converter?

If you keep driving it like that, you're going to cook the engine.

the converter may be clogged causing a exhaust restriction which will cause the engine to lose power and more the longer you drive it,eventually it will not move at all
