RE: piston slap
I think he's talking about a more muted sound than a ticking. My wifes 02 has more of a soft "thunking" sound at idle and this is more pronounced at cold start up. I think it's just the nature of DCX's four cylinder engines.as we've owned 2.2's and 2.5's that had the same noise. I even took our 90 Shadow back and demanded that something be done about it at 24,000 miles. The mechanic said it was piston slap, a common occurence in Chrysler 4 cyl. vehicles and that the noise did not have an adverse effect on the life of the engine. Well I insisted something be done and a bottom end kit was put in the vehicle under warranty. The sound went away for about another 20 to 25000 miles and was back again. He was right just common to the 4 cyl. My oldest son owned a Dodge Dynasty 2.5 and you would swear that engine was going to come apart, the piston slap was so bad. It ran to 120,000 mi. before it was rearended and totalled. I think it's more of an annoyance than something to worry about. Just the nature of the little beast.
