MonteC's Transmission Corner (For Info Only)
You can swap the tail housings but it is a royal pain in the *** to do. Both are the same transmission. If you use your converter and swap the tailshaft housings then you can use it.
montec,i was told you post here, and see weather you could help identify my problem,my truck is a 96 1500 318 5 speed.
my problem is trans fluid is coming out around the shifter gasket area. i have tried just about everything i know to stop it,and nothing seems to work. i have schlacked it,i have tried silcone, both of these with the gasket.i tried putting the gasket in there dry, nothing works,to me it seems the trans is building pressure inside somehow, and i guess the shifter gasket is the weakest point of exit??? and i should be able to add fluid through the shifter opening right?? or does it need to be added through the port? thanks for your help.

Hey MonteC.
My transmission is shifting late. Today, after taking off from a red light, with steady acceleration, I got up to 50 mph, and the rpm were at 3,700. I had to drop it in to neutral and then back into drive to get it to shift up. On my way home, the truck was not shifting up at lower rpm. When I was taking off from a red light, I got up to 30 mph, and it still hadn't shifted up. I left off the gas and coasted, and it shifted, but the next time I took off from a red light, it didn't. Luckily I wasn't going too far.
I had the transmission rebuilt about 5 years ago, and last summer I changed the transmission fluid and the filter (dropped the pan). I cleaned the magnet off really good too. Is there anything that I could change myself to fix this problem, without having to remove the transmission completely?
Also, I have a 2001, 5.2 L. It doesn't do this every single time, and only after I've been driving for about 5-10 minutes.
Thanks bro!

Hey MonteC.
I did changed my 46RE with another 46RE on my 1999 Dodge Ram Sport
but now I got both Transmission Temp light and the OD off lights on
it runs, but only 3 speed and it surges while shifting.
I got 30 days of warranty in-case it messes up
but how can I fix those problems?

So my transmission guy saying the optimum temp is 176º was right on the money then.
Mine hangs around 160º-170º when hot at idle with just a stacked plate style cooler like a b&m.

So was my guy right when he said that the stock coolers have a coating on the inside that breaks up over time and clogs up the works in the transmission? That is why he bypassed it all together and used just this cooler.
