Default Should He change tranny Fluid

Friend of mine has 2004 Dodge Ram 4.7 that he uses to pull around his bass boat. It has 120,000 miles on it.
Should he change the tranny fluid, it’s never been done before?
Local shop told him if he has not done it before not to bother it could cause him more problems or a failure.
I told him friend of mine bought 2000 Dakota with 29,000 miles on it I changed the fluid and filters at 90,000 miles
and she now has 144,000 on it and still running strong and ready for another change in about 5,000 miles.
I said as long as they don’t flush it he should be ok, I heard that flushing could cause some failures after going so long without changing the fluid.
Thanks

Dave

Thats right dave, flushing is the devil, lol. Just drop the pan and change both the filters internal. That is a different transmission than what you have. Yours is the 46re, his is the 45RFE. COMPLETELY different transmission. The 45RFE has two internal filters, a spin on and a push in. BE CAREFUL when you change the push in filter. It has a small bolt that holds it in, ive seen cases where people do a filter change and the truck wont move after words. What happened was when they tightened the bolt down it pulled the filter out of the seal and the pump wasnt able to suck fluid, resulting in a no move condition.

The 45RFE is a pretty decent transmission. Sonnax makes a plug in resister to boost line pressure, that would help your buddy if he is towing a boat often. I think its in the neighbor hood of 50 dollars, stupid easy to install. Ill see if i can find it, ill post it in the 3rd gen section.

Ok I'll see if i can talk him into it. PACT has the Sonnax resistor on their website.

45RFE - 545RFE - 68RFE Line Pressure Booster

#45LPB / #68LPB. This family of transmissions uses a full range line pressure sensor mounted on the outside of the transmission for "closed loop" line pressure control. Due to this system, traditional methods of raising line pressure by changing the PR spring or valves have no effect. This Line Pressure Booster alters the pressure signal sent to the computer causing the computer to raise line pressure. The 68RFE has a 10-15 PSI increase and the 45RFE and 545RFE has a 15-30 PSI increase. Higher line pressure increases clutch holding power and torque capacity. Changes in shift feel will be noticed mostly under aggressive driving or loaded conditions. This part is ideal for heavy duty and modified vehicles and even stock transmissions when a little extra pressure is desired. No other modifications are required. The Line Pressure Booster installs between the pressure sensor and vehicle harness using OEM style sealed connectors. Simply unplug the vehicle harness and reconnect with one of these parts. Cost $49.00 Qty 12345

Transmission Type 45RFE / 545RFE68RFE

Thanks Dave

MonteC will correct me if I'm wrong, but the tranny's are the same (46rh)

The torque converter is different though. The 360 TC if weighted but the 318 is not.

Tailshafts are going to be different too and 4x4 is shorter.
