Well, not my truck, but, my Astro van... Trying to change the thermostat, as the engine was overheating...... and broke off one of the bolts. There is a bit sticking up, enough to thread a nut on to, but, I just can't get my weld to hold. I am using a flux-core wire welder, and no matter what I do, the weld just will NOT hold. The nut threads right back off. No room to get in there with vice grips..... and I REALLY don't want to pull the intake...... I need another solution. I have had it for tonight.

HeyYou,
Man that sucks......................................
Do you have a torch? Try heating up the bolt first before you try to weld on it. That may make the weld hold better. My guess is that if you can't get a weld to hold you are going to have to remove the intake manifold.

Bite your tongue! I don't WANT to remove the intake.... It's a farking VAN! Talk about a major pain in the keester.....

I have a torch, but, I don't think I can heat the bolt, without burning other stuff that is also in the area. I suspect a better welder may be in order... I am using the 'homeowner' style wire feed welder, with flux core wire. I suspect that regular wire, and gas as a shield, would actually weld better....

I am going to play with it some more tomorrow..... And I may end up pulling the intake, much as I don't want to.......

Flux core is not bad. Get some aluminum foil to stuff/wrap things for protection from torch.

Perhaps also a hack saw blade to manually cut into bit for flathead driver?

Before you slot the end, give it a couple of axial blows with a hammer to help crack the threads loose.

Wish there was room to get in there with a saw, or hammer.... That's part of the problem. (and why removing the intake may actually make the job easier...... just more time consuming.)

I have been soaking it with chems overnight, so, head out later, and see if it is feeling any more cooperative.

Loaded up with a pile of roofing materiel for the pending re-roof of the back porch (replacing everything above the top plate).
It's the first load since the new paint job, and addition of tie-down rails.
I must say, I'm pleased with the ease of strapping stuff in now... lov'n those rails.
The bed-liner survived, so I must have done something right putting it on.
