Finally got one again except this time around, I have 134,000 miles on it . Previous owner hit a hog so....brand new radiator with 50/50 antifreeze, battery, stereo with kit and that's it for now. Freon exploded through tube because it was put in wrong port. I didn't know until after. Currently working on cold ac. Ugh..fuse, compressor, Condenser...so many things. Always hated working on vehicles. No choice now..
need help. Anyone around??
Most recent project I finished on my truck was installing a new Pioneer Radio Head Unit. I personally think that it turned out very nice a clean. Let me know what you guys think Don't mind the glare or dust please, took the picture at night with the flashlight, as for the dust, I often drive on gravel roads.
about it.
Well It's been a busy week or so, and I haven't posted in one of these threads in a long time. Any of you following my 98 build thread know these parts were all destine to be on that truck but that projects gotten a little more in-depth than originally planned and these parts were going to start rusting apart if I didn't get them bolted onto an engine, so pretty much everything got thrown at the 96 now.
Upon tear down I realized how poor of shape this ignition system was, I just picked up this truck a couple months ago for a 1000 bucks, it needed axle u-joints and supposedly a brake issue but have yet to figure out that one, brakes seem fine to me, It got every u-joint replaced and new wheel bearings.
So back to this you can see the distributor was pretty nasty inside, as well as the coil cracked up in multiple places and even a plug wire was broke inside the boot. Truck ran surprisingly well for sitting 3 years, and just throwing in a battery and some new tires, fresh gas later on.
I'm pretty bad at taking pictures but anyway we got everything out and apart, no real major issues, water pump was grinding on the housing so replaced that, belt idler and tensioner were sticky so replaced both those as well as the belt (after this picture) So what we stuck in here was a Hughes steam roller cam, the less aggressive one of the two they label "steamroller" not sure how else to reference it. I have new EQ heads that I had the hughes spring kit installed and the guides cut for 550 lift, and then everything ported blended ect whatever was needed. I don't recall the CFM rating but it was definitely an improvement, stock thickness MLS head gasket, ARP head studs, new roller timing chain setup, new lifters and push tubes, slapped on some showy valve covers
Next we installed all new plugs wires, cap, rotor and coil. I got impatient getting this back together so we dropped the old intake back on and a couple days later I get the call my other intake is done and cut out for the 58mm throttle body so probably be switching those out in the near future. Dropped the oil pan installed a new pan seal, and filled her up with some 10W-30 high zinc oil
Next we installed the FFD electric fans, I opted not to reuse the fan shroud. I like the extra real estate and the open look. I have ordered a remote mount coolant overflow and washer bottle
Lastly we topped it off with a new volant intake
Cranked her over for quite awhile with the coil and fuel pump unhooked. Got good oil pressure on the gauge and cranked a while longer hoping to get all the lifters filled up. hooked everything up and she popped right off, sounds pretty healthy. At this point, I set the distributor using the voltage method but my scanner still shows fuel sync is wrong (wish it would just let me set it), but ill just let my tuner set it when he gets ready to tune it. Which is where we're at now. Intake swap and off to the tuner.

First post here, but have lurked for the past month or so since getting my 98 Ram 1500. Replaced the front driver side wheel bearing since it was squealing so badly you could hear me rolling in a couple blocks away... that thing was fused on there pretty good, probably all a result of a ridiculously over-torqued axle nut. But all's well that ends well, it was a good day off work (got called off for rain, but ended up being sunny enough to work on the bearing all morning) and my new shocks (Monro-Matic Plus) came so I'll tackle that next. I'm kind of surprised at how much I love this truck and working on it, never thought I'd end up with a Ram because of how they tend to rot out here in the Midwest but here we are, having fun...

The axle nuts ARE torqued to a truly stupid value.... (180ft/lbs or so) They hold the wheel bearings together, so you don't have a tire abandon you while driving. Proper torque is required for bearing longevity.
Not 2nd gen related but I went to figure out why my 06 Ram Hemi was misfiring on cylinder 4 turns out its low on compression so it must have dropped a valve or a bad lifter. Less then 20K on the rebuild lmao

Unsure. I ordered a leak down tester. It's weird according to my scan tool within 1 minute of it idling at about 600RPM it is saying it is misfiring about 1000 times. Hold the RPMs at 3K or drive it under WOT misfire is gone.
Now my 15 Durango has a stumble and no codes and can't figure that out. The joy of vehicles
