I just ordered one yesterday, just here today. Before my truck had problems (way to long of a story to really tell) it had a non-death flashed pcm before and now it does have a death flashed pcm, it's no where near the power or the sound it used to be. Right now i'm running the 87 tune, still have to put higher octane fuel and change out the t-stat, it has a little more power then it did before the pcm change. Torque management turned off helps a great deal.

I just got word from Hemi regarding octane- it's always best on higher octane fuel for towing. I was not sure so, I had emailed him regarding getting a tune for mine and he said that it does work better running higher octane. I sure wish we had 93 octane out west. Back east, the gas is MILES better than the polluted gas they make us use out here.

I recall vividly, the first time I ran 93 on the SCT. It was night and day regarding power and feel.

I contacted Hemi too.. Something I did not know is 1996 rams don't have an torque management delete option like the 97 and newer do, so slipping problems still maybe with the trans, but not due to toque delete.

He did send me another 87 tune to try out and running it right now. So far no slipping but will give it a couple days to a week before knowing for sure.. It does idle and run better that is for sure..

Is torque management the reason my trucks takes off like a bat out of hell once the tach hits 3K?

Mine does that too about 3K but it's a five speed. I think it's just the meat of the powerband right in there. That little kick right there so happens to approximately line up with the torque peak per the dyno charts I've seen for the stockers so I think it is logical.

Gonna have to have a look at the power curves...... I just find it kinda strange, its like someone flips a switch, and the tubo-boost comes on..... it is THAT much of a difference.

Maybe yours IS doing something weird. I just know that I was rather surprised at how peaky my engine is considering it's in a truck, albeit a fairly low RPM peak but still quite a little bit of a kick right in the 2.7-4 grand happy place on mine. It also sounds all cool like a low RPM nascar engine right in there too.

It's all relative I guess. I've been into riding race bikes and used to tweak with water cooled VW's back in the day. Those, especially the 2-stroke bikes, can be really peaky machines so the truck seems quite mellow in comparison. However compared to the dumptrucks and tractors I used to work with when laying asphalt these Magnums might as well be Formula 1 engines. lol

On the other hand, after joining the forum I'm thanking my lucky stars I ended up with a NV4500 truck. You auto tranny boys seem to have it a bit rough judging by the forum posts I've noticed. I like the thought of an automatic for loading up the camper but man I'm sure not jealous of all yous who seemingly get forced into being nearly pro level tranny techs out of necessity to get er down the road.

That's peculiar, Hemi stated that he removed torque management to me last year on this. Hmmm. Makes we wonder what the truth is here. Unless: due to the TYPE of PCM / MFG date, there may be a possibility that on some 96 models, the management can not be deleted thus being partially true.

I agree that I think it is more a PCM/MFG date thing then what year.. He must have all the info on when exactly the PCM changes took affect? I would like to know for sure though..

Did this thread get moved.. How is this a non-Technical thread
