if thats the case then all you need is the right amount of resistors or a voltage regulator to convert it to a 5 volt reference circuit. There are tons of 5 volt circuits on newer vehicles, they get down from 12 to 5 volts someway.

 

The problem being, that that tach kit is for a distributorless ignition system. It won't work with a dizzy.

 

but if you are going to make your own what does it matter if you fry it testing things out?

 

If it takes 5v, then giving it a pulsing 12v signal will bow the PCB on it. It's designed for a digital signal, not a 12v signal occurent with the spark. See what I am saying?

 

so. if you are going to build a custom gauge then what the heck does it matter if you blow up the tach? you should see less than 12v at the negative side of the coil.

 

actually the neg side of the coil is a 5 volt circuit if i remember correctly. And the kit i posted is for distributerless system but it gets its signal of the coil wire just like any other tach. So you could still use it, you would just be bypassing the dizzy part of the equation. Check the FSM but im pretty sure the neg on the coil is a 5 volt circuit, i seem to remember testing for 5 volts on crank when i was diagnosing my ASD circuit.

 

actually i was more so thinking a full 12v would most likely kill the coil that is on the 318 that he put in his truck which is why they used ballast resisters.

 

La ignition systems don't have ASD.

 

Still not sure why you didn't just carb the Magnum. lol Better head design anyhow.
