My OD on this 97 green beast is automatically off. Chilly Phil's color is original and looks great. My original build sheet indicated emerald green pearl. Some previous owner re-painted the entire truck Moss Green (including the chip proof coat at the bottom). K.

Dang, that means I always ran mine in overdrive since I always had my orange light off.

Just for referance taken from the 96 FSM.

OVERDRIVE OFF SWITCH

The overdrive OFF (control) switch is located in the instrument panel. The switch is a momentary contact device that signals the PCM to toggle current status of the overdrive function. At key-on, overdrive operation is allowed. Pressing the switch once causes the overdrive OFF mode to be entered and the overdrive OFF switch lamp to be illuminated. Pressing the switch a second time causes normal overdrive operation to be restored and the overdrive lamp to be turned off. The overdrive OFF mode defaults to ON after the ignition switch is cycled OFF and ON. The normal position for the control switch is the ON position.

The switch must be in this position to energize the solenoid and allow a 3-4 upshift. The control switch indicator light illuminates only when the overdrive switch is turned to the OFF position, or when illuminated by the transmission control module.

I'm curious as to why you'd want to do that? Your truck must be screaming at even 100km/h. Hell, I rev 2300 at that speed with 3.55 gears and 35's with OD off...Your final drive should be close to what it was stock, no?

@ChillyPhil - does your truck not downshift incessantly at anything over 60mph if it's on? What do you rev?

^To add to that, it could be illuminated by the transmission control module if the transmission overheats, because the controller will disable the O/D if the transmission gets too hot, or at least it is supposed to.

When my trans failed my O/D light flashed at me. Not everyone has this happen.

It's not that often I get to go that fast around here, most of the roads I travel are more like 80km/h and twisty mountain roads to boot. Up at 100km/h I would use od unless I was towing. I think it was around 2600-2800 rpm out of OD at 100km/h.

I am back to 4.10's since I put the 60's under it this summer.

It's just totally weird shifting. I'll hammer it and it'll rev high, go down to cruise, rev high, then go down to cruising rpms and I'll still have it to the floor while it's doing all of that. Then it'll gradually, very slowly go up in rpms and speed. (Still holding pedal to floor)

Ever since I had it, I had it in overdrive (light not illuminated), could that of caused wear or damage to anything with the tranny?
