I'm hoping he is referring to the many variables that can effect gas mileage, not actually calculating mileage....there is nothing variable about straight math. People are just too lazy to properly "calculate" MPG's and go off the display (if equipped), which does vary greatly sometimes. The one on my Dak was always off compared to a hand calculation, sometimes less, sometimes more. I used the overhead MPG display as a reference only and considered it another "idiot light" so to speak.

And yes, the MPG display is pretty much "taking it under advisement".
They were in rough shape when I got the mower but they did a good job, I did some cutting down by the creek and hit a rock that was mostly buried in the ground, it bent the tip of the blade down then it broke off.
