Default Rear End Idea

So I've got a hankerin'/stupid idea to make the "poor" mans version of a locked rear end: welding the spider gears. My truck is a stock 2wd '01 so it has a standard Chrysler 9.25 3.55 geared open diff.

What are the cons of doing this? It's merely just a "wanting to" at the moment but I would like to make it into reality.

Anyone on these forums with past/current experience with a welded rear end?

If you have a big budget for new rear tires and want to have to readjust the way you steer/accelerate in turns then I say go for it.

We'll call it "re-learning"

If you do it and its not done correctly it can get costly real quick. Ive only ever done this on something that would never see pavement besides crossing the road to another trail. The on-road manners would probably be to annoying for me to handle. Best of luck on whatever you go with. That being said I really enjoyed having the rear welded on my "field/trail" truck. I went with the posi unit in my 1500 though cause it sees mostly 70% on road and 30% offroad. If you do weld it post some pics and let us know how you like it

don't do it on a street driven truck.
on a wet road you'll end up in the ditch.

I think I could learn to drive and steer with the rear end being full time locked. Big budget for tires? Pretty much what I want, only once a year. And dlyter09 I understand your point on the street driven versus trail/field truck.

You go ahead and do that.
Just don't come back bitching because you broke something.

A side, note, if you DO manage epic driftage, please take a video.

I promise (finger's crossed) I won't come back and bitch because I broke something

If you want to see epic driftage from a truck with a welded rear end go to youtube, I did Found a few video's.

But I'm not looking to weld the rear for driftage or general screwing around. But in the event I did do something stupid on purpose I would definitely put it on Youtube for you guys to enjoy my stupidity
