HammerZ71 over in the 3rd Gen Section is probably a good person to ask.

Oh, I hope your getting it for a good price with a full blown transmission!

The trans should be the same if im not mistaken. The Cherokees are nice rigs. Im more of a CH and TJ fan though. I miss my TJ.. they are Damn near bullet proof

There is no such thing as a 1992 Jeep Grand Cherokee...

However If it's a 1993 Grand Cherokee It could have the Same Transmission.

The 4.0 XJ Cherokee used the AW4 transmission, and the Grand Cherokee only had that Tranny in 1993. But midway through their 93 models they did away with it.

Whether or not another tranny will work, I do not know.

Take the VIN's, and call the dealer ship, Parts will be able to look up what originally came with the jeep for transmissions.

there was a 92 model... but if you buy parts you need to buy them for 93-96ish...

just like my 1999 chevy 1500 is a early model but when i buy body panels for it i need to get them for 94-98

That would be a shame, especially with a good 4.0 I6 in it. 4WD XJs with decent bodies are in HUGE demand around here and fetch big bucks still, even with blown engines AND transmissions people want them for the body and solid axles front and rear. Good running 4.0, 4x4 XJs will fetch $5000 around here with 150k miles on them easy. About the only vehicles with that kinda of age going for more $ around here are Wranglers.

If I had the opportunity with a donor vehicle sitting right there with a transmission for the taking, I'd be swapping it out and either build myself up a killer off-road rig or sell the thing for a few grand..
