Look's like a move North is in our future.. :icon_snow:
I have a wifi set up between two of moy offices which are across forom the courthouse from each other. ONly about 150 yards. There are some setups that allow for up to 1/4 mile that I know of and probably some farther. I went low power for security purposes...don't want signal broadcast across town.
I have to be caustious of deer traveling to Austin - an area we call the Hill Country here. Heavy deer population. So far, haven't bagged one in my truck.......

who's putting the AP's on the mountain tops? govt, telco, or private individual?
and the antennas are omni-directional?
how far can you shoot the wifi in an outdoor line of site environment like that?
any idea what antenna is used?
do you need a special antenna to bring the wifi into the house, or does it just filter in directly to a laptop?
i got a buddy that works for a privately owned, rural telephone company in middle ga. they supply land lines, dsl, satellite tv. if there's such any thing as that up there, you should apply for a job there. i got another buddy that works for a REMC (rural elec membership corp), rural equivalent/alternative to Ga. Power or TVA. check out that possibility also. He started as a laborer/driver and they taught him everything.

I think the default distance setting on the radio is 2 miles, but in the case of this house, which would be wireless accessible when the AP on Point Lookout is up, and we put up a special antenna due to the distance, I think we'd have to change the settings to 7 miles...
There's a wireless radio inside of a special antenna I guess.... Not sure what exterior box is called, it helps receive signal, I went out and looked at one, the only marking on it was which direction polarity was on it.
You run a CAT5 cable from the radio to a POE, Power Over Ethernet (inside the house) to a wireless router, or whatever setup they want on the inside.
So had an interesting experience out doing a wireless survey today.
We had to go into the boonies to get to this dudes place, I mean it is crazy, up the mountain, down the mountain, we took Fred, my grandfather's BMW, and it this is not a car route... Anyway...
So we're at the guys house, he's got over 100 acres of land, originally bought it to hunt on and he never did.
The animals have gotten so used to his presence that while we were on the back porch talking and testing wireless signal a deer walks up the hill right at us. It would stop and look at us and keep on coming. He said he's got a few up there that will eat corn out of his hand.
Then when we go to leave another deer, this one with a collar on it's neck, (the guy does this in hopes that hunters wont kill it) walks up to the car and just stands there checking us out...
It was pretty cool.... I've never been around a deer that would do that...

Dh, hopefully not! But the deer are plentiful here, they are out all hours of the day, it's a wonder I haven't hit one yet.... (When I do I guess I'll travel West, seems we know a guy out there who's been doing some body work on his truck, and has been rather successful thus far
)
For those interested in IT and WiFi, we finally got notice that they are ready to install fiber, there is a meeting scheduled for Monday at 1:30 to go over the official "plan" and whatnot...
So we are going to be very busy the next 2 weeks, lots of people who have already signed up and are just waiting for installation.... Plus those who sign up after....
Good for the wallet

Thought I'd throw out an update.
We finally got the green light to begin fiber installations, already got 4 complete, and we'll be putting up some wireless equipment to feed a valley in the wireless "dead zone" that is dying to get high speed, and those accounts are pure profit.
The wife is going to take over as office manager and run the accounts and what not.
The plan is shortly after the fiber installations are complete or almost 100% complete and the new wireless equipment is up, the grandfather is hauling *** to FairFax, as he wants me to take over.
I've gotten used to life back in Virginia, gonna have to get a 4wd sometime, saw a 1983 F150 4x4 with a new oak flatbed with metal rails for $1100 on craigslist. Sounds fun, should make a good enough snow truck.
