Obviously you don't know much about NV4500's. They are known for being the strongest factory configuration 5 speed manual ever built. I have yet to hear of one killed by anything other than neglect/abuse (aside from regular syncro/bearing wear). Do a little reading, they are amazing gearboxes. I'd like to see how long your 46re lasted behind a stock 12 valve, much less the built 800+ ft-lb Cummins's that numerous people run in front of completely stock NV4500's.

Well, seems I hit a nerve

Seems like it is indeed a good transmission.

And I know these 46re's are crap, I would actually like to see one behind a Cummin's, just to see the carnage!.

My bad haha I didn't mean to flip I just have never heard anyone say NV4500's are "junky"

And they actually put 46rh's behind the 92-93 (Maybe 91 as well) Cummins trucks, but being the hydraulically controlled versions, they seem to last okay when the motor is left stock

nope not jealous at all. i live in the rust belt, but i can atleast say i have ALL of my trucks body parts intact, and in good working order.

i have 184k on my truck, and i can make my truck out perform that 2500 any day.

ive done more with my truck, than its rated for. for example: i have an 8' heavy duty fisher plow on my truck. its only rated for a 7.5' regular duty plow. ive been on the same ball joints(with unknown mileage) since i bought my truck 3 years ago. same wheel bearings for 2 years, and same tie-rods, and track bar since i bought it too. i think thats saying something right there.

end of rant.......

I have 160k on my 1500. Tranny is fine and still running original ball joints with no wobble and still no oil in the valley and the cat is still fine. I have 1 crack on my dash and the only thing that doesn't work is the a/c, which I can live without. Now I'm not saying any of these problems won't come up at some time, but no, there is nothing wrong with a truck that has had no major issues in 160k miles. I would say it has outlasted its engineered life span. I just laugh when I read folks saying how junky Dodge trannies are when they go out at 180k. Really? Tell that to the Ford, Chevy and Toyota guys whose trannies usually detonate by 120k, at most.

Yeah, everyone is always bitchin' about how crappy Dodge auto transmissions are, but really, they don't seem to be any worse than Chevy or Ford. My truck has 117k, original tranny, absolutely perfect. If you look on Craigslist, just as many Silverados, F-150's, Tahoes, and Expeditions say they've had the transmission rebuilt as Rams, and Durangos.

I would still love a Manual in my truck though. A kid who was 2 grades below me in school had a 98 Ram 1500 5.9 4x4 with the 5-speed. It has over 350,000 miles, with the original Transmission, and engine. He still does burnouts and runs the hell out of it every time I see him. and goes off-roading at least twice a month. It was his dads before it was given to him, and his dad drives the same way. He just wants to see how long it will last.

I'd check the rear dif gear ratio, to be sure of what it is. By the looks of the bed on both sides behind the rear tires. It looks like the original rear fell out of it.
