Wal-Mart philosophy is a bit *** backwards though, take smaller stores for example, smaller stores generally have far less help than larger stores, but not 100% of the time, there are exceptions, but when your department needs help they say "get your sales up, more sales = more help". Got to have stocked shelves before you have sales....

HO and the District Manager will get bitchy about unapproved overtime.. The hours for every department in the store are sent by HO. Everyone hates the 40 registers and 3 that might be open, but cashiers hours are no different, controlled HO.

But then, I got used to extremely high levels of corporate stupidity when I worked at Borders.... Which, I would point out, is now gone. (not my fault....
) Staples/Wal-mart are just typical large corporate entities. The folks that make the decisions are only looking at the money they get to put into their pocket. Doesn't seem to occur to them that properly staffing the various departments would actually INCREASE productivity/profit.
It's the departmentalizing of big companies that becomes the problem.
We see it all the time with big building companies.
Purchasing is only looking at lowest price to buy... the less it costs the better they did their job... getting something for pennies less, times 1000's of houses equals millions that they saved the company.
If quality or workmanship is bad, it is the warranty department that has to deal with that, not purchasing... warranty department has to make it right with the least expenditure, else they're not doing their job well.
It never occurs to them that paying a little more upfront to save a large amount on the back end would net them more, and have a happier customer.
