Default 99ram transmission type

__Hello, I appologize in advance if this is an age old question. I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.2l v8 2WD automatic. The transmission began slipping so i removed it to swap it out. I have a few potential donor trucks that i am looking at buying to swap transmissions I've been told by several people that there are a few different types of transmissions for the same model truck. what i've found online is a 96-99 dodge ram 5.2l 2wd auto will fit. I am just looking for someone to confirm what transmissions will fit my truck. Thanks

1994-1996 (some of the '96 anyway) where 46RH. Some of the '96 and up are 46RE.

Your '99 is a 46RE, so just get another 46RE. Closest to your year is preferred....

46re is the transmission you have now. 96-01 46re should bolt right up but as Stewie said get as close to your year as possible. A 42re or 44re may bolt up but they're not recommended as they're even more frail then the 46re is..

Thanks. So if I find a 96-01 ram 5.2 2wd auto the trans will be a 46re? Just want to keep from buying a donor with wrong transmission. Thanks again.

Should be. Get a build sheet for the donor before you buy it just to be sure though. That or ask the seller to get you a build sheet, then you'll know for sure.

5.2 or 5.9 will work. Both use the same trans.

Keep in mind, in 2000, connector pinouts changed, so the 00 and up won't be a direct drop in/hook up, and expect it to work. Would need to change out the electrical stuff to get TCC, and O/D to work properly. So, 96-99 out of a V-8 2wd is your best bet.

Easy way to tell would be the connector on the driver side. From another thread here 3 pin should be RH, 8 pin should be RE.

Yes, but that only tells you if it's an RH or RE . You still need the correct year tranny for it to be plug and play as Heyyou stated.

Yes....... But more important to know right off if it's an RH or RE... If one screwed up and got a newer trans worst case you have to buy new sensors to make it work....

Edit: 1997-1999 should be complete plug and play. 1996 is a split year, need to verify it's an RE before you purchase....
