Default need wisdom on potential purchase

What do you guys think of this truck? It's very cheap which leads to suspicion, but it look pretty straight and nice, even the interior despite the 250,000 miles it says it has. Been looking for a 98+ quad cab sport to have for more cab room. I don't know this dealer place at all, sounds like a sketchy place. What might I check for if I went to look at it? hope the link works

I'd go take a look at it. Check the fluids if they are rather clean/new ask to take it for the test drive get it up to temp and check them again. Also if they will let you check the t-case fluid and shift it from 2wd 4low and 4high put it in drive and reverse to test each. Would say give it a little power brake in 4wd to make sure it's locking into 4wd but I don't think they would like that.

And lastly ask for all maintenance records if they have any.

ok sounds good. no matter how I book that thing, it's tough to book it at that value. I'm thinking it may have a salvage title or something. It looks so good, except those 3rd gen wheels and 2nd gen center caps...

Just get the scoop on engine compression, recent trans rebuild, and do the magnet trick to see if plenum has been done. If compression is no good walk away. If trans hasn't been rebuilt save some money for when it goes, same with the plenum.

And see if you can knock down the price because of the ugly steering wheel cover.

Wow, what a price. Is that really 250xxx miles or is it km? I envy the condition of American trucks...

Yeah, the high mileage is the reason for the price, It's not that great of a deal when you factor that in. Its not a bad deal, but it's not great either.

Actually, considering the condition, thats a good price. At least, it would be if it were for sale around here....

Looks like it had some not-so-great body repair work though.... especially on the passenger door there. but, all in all, looks pretty good for the money.

Getting some good feedback here. I think I'll go take a look at it this Saturday afternoon. The high mileage in my opinion is not a huge factor because I'm kind of looking for a truck to tinker around with the motor a bit to get some power and it'd be a good candidate for a fun rebuild like that. Tranny scares me but I'm sure it's been rebuilt by now at some point. So yeah I'll check the fluids and look over the body/paint etc. and see if they have a maintenance records for it.

If nothing else, there is a wealth of resources available here for rebuilding the trans yourself. Several members have done so, and they had never been inside a trans before.

That, and I just got done working on a truck that had 360K miles on it, and still the original trans......
