The Official 2014 2nd Gen RAM Forum OT thread
so im kinda irritated this mornning...
i posted the same thread, both here, and on jeep forum. com, and i got more help on here, by less people, than i did on jeep forum. most of them, instead of helping are saying its a bad diif, or it happened to them, and to dump money i dont have into it.
one person went so far as to post a pic of a hub assembly to say replace it.
there was only 1 guy, like hammer, suggested to pull the cover, and do a fluid change.
i think im just gonna post here from now on. everyone on this forum are the most helpful people compared to other forums, bar-none!

Which Jeep forum? Some are better than others just like Dodge forums.
The 4.0 is a great engine but it isn't such a great engine when trying to motivate a SUV like a Grand Cherokee. In a Wrangler it had enough power and even in the XJ Cherokee it did ok but in a ZJ or WJ it was just lacking. And because you had your foot in the floor most of the time your MPG suffered. The 4.7 was a good engine as long as you didn't overheat it. If you did you were pretty much guaranteed a blown head gasket.
It isn't all it's cracked up to be. It would leak and you'd come out to a flat tire after sitting overnight. So then you'd have to sit and wait for the tire to air back up before you could go anywhere. Yes it has the KOOL factor but I'm not sure I would want the hassle on my vehicle.
we had an 06 grand cherokee with the v6 for a while. It was slow, got bad mpg and was very underpowered. We got rid of it. If it had the v8 we probably would of kept it. It was only rated at 1 less mpg and a lot more fun to drive.
That thing was so dang uncomfortable though. And had terrible sight lines. at least for me. I constantly hit the roof with my head and the a pillar was always in the way.
So can someone explain all the tj yj wj xj things? I cant make sense of it

Wranglers:
YJ (1987–1995)
*No wrangler made in 1996*
TJ (1997–2006) They also had a longer wheelbase Jeep called the LJ during this time.
JK (2007–present) JKU is the 4-door model.
Cherokees:
SJ (1974-1983) Fullsize
XJ (1984–2001) The smaller ones
Grand Cherokees:
ZJ (1993–1998)
WJ (1999–2004)
WK (2005–2010)
WK2 (2010–present)
Good job Bartow but you forgot a few.
MJ (86-92) Compact Pickup
KJ (02-07) Liberty
KK (08-Present) Liberty
XK (06-10) Commander
MK (07-Present) Compass
KL (14-?) New Cherokee
And then if you want to cover all the models from before the 80's I can do that for you too.
Ham Bone, The V-6 into your Grand Cherokee isn't the same engine being talked about. The 3.7L V-6 they used in the Liberty and GC wasn't able to get out of it's own way. Never mind what the EPA ratings are if you have your foot in the floor all the time to get your hunk moving your MPG is going to suffer. Getting the Hemi would give you a boost in power and I'd bet your MPG would have been better too.
My wife had a 02 GC with the 4.7L V-8 and got 17-19 MPG most of the time. It got better mileage than her Liberty with that 3.7L V-6. Jeeps aren't made to get awesome fuel mileage they are made to take you places other rigs won't. Now some of the NEW Jeeps may not hold true to that but ones with TWO solid axles can go places a lot of rigs can't.

Thanks for the info guys.
I knew that wasn't the same engine. I was just commenting on my limited experience with Jeeps.
I know the new pentastar v6 is supposed to be a great engine for both power and mpg.
The 4.0 is classic though. There are so many of those still driving around today. Tons of them are mail man vehicles up here.
I've been working on a s10 recently. And it makes me miss the solid axle my dodge has. Theres no room to do anything.
I infer from your post that they are going away from the solid front axle Wildman? Going to ifs I suppose?
Im sure that will be fine for all the grocery and soccer moms out there. But I doubt anybody really serious about off roading would want anything to do with it.
You could compare it to Subaru. They have made a name for themselves for their standard awd. And they're plenty good for driving in weather in a snow shower or something. But they stay on the road. You don't see them out climbing rocks or mudding.
Anyway. What do I know, I'm just a kid with a big gas guzzling plow truck

you must have one of them newer S10s...
my 87 is easy as pie to work on.
huge engine compartment for that little 4 banger, IFS isn't bad on the old Rwd S10s still solid axle rear, though I swapped a 98 rear end into it so it has limited slip + 4 wheel disc brakes.

Mine is a 92 4x4. it came with a 4.3, but im shoving a 350 in there.... somehow lol.
They cram the diff in there. everything is crammed in there. had to unbolt body bolts and jack body up 6 inches so the oil pan sump could clear the diff and get the engine out.
It is simple to work on. Just cramped working area.
