ii know guys add coolant to their ac system all the time. But what if its been completely evacuated.

I put a new compressor on it like, three years ago and never got the system charged. Can i just do with the cans?

Yes you can, make sure you put oil in the system. If you don't put oil in it it will ruin it, the freon cans have some in them but not enough for a cleanly evacuated system. You can get the oil in cans that you can hook up to the DIY charging kits. Make sure you get the right type, and do NOT put too much in. Too much will burn the compressor up. Usually I put half the oil in, then put in half the freon, then the rest of the oil, and the rest of the freon. If it's been holding vacuum, you can put the first round of oil and freon in without the compressor engaged. As well get the right type of oil for the freon you are using (if you use synthetic freon it needs a different oil).

These geese have been beside my place in the field for 4 days now. At one point there were thousands of them. Pretty cool.

Only things I think I got evacuate before I pulled the old compressor off. So I think I need to get it done again.

Any time the system is opened up it should be fully evacuated. That will remove all moisture and air.

No.

You can use the cans for topping off the system, but not for what you need.

You'll have to take it somewhere that does a/c and have it evacuated. Then might as well have them fill it also since it would be hooked up to the machine and takes about 30 seconds longer to fill it.

I replaced pretty much every component on my Z28, compressor, evaporator, orifice, drier, etc. It had been open for a number of years before I bought it. I put al the new parts on, filled it with one can of oil and 2 cans of R134 without every having it vacuumed. Worked great. Blew cold air whenever I needed it. All depends on how much you want to spend.

picked up my craftsman rider today. zero chance of a thrown rod. its a single cylinder 18.5hp briggs. gonna adjust the valves tomorrow. motor will crank over fine without spark plug, but as soon as the plug is put back in the motor sorta locks up almost as if there is too much compression.

i know briggs has a compression release lobe on the cam, which could be the issue, but im gonna check the rocker adjustment first.

ill have picks tomorrow.
