If you hate computers enough to put Windows on them, you shouldn't be surprised when they start hating you back.

Do I come across as someone who runs BSD and doesn't know how to work it?

Yep. I was a Unix guy before Windows existed, and was running FreeBSD on my PC about 20 years ago when I somehow or other came into possession of a nifty sound card that FreeBSD didn't yet support so I gave Debian a go. So far, so good: Works fine, lasts a long time, won't rust, bust, or collect dust.

I grew up with Microsoft, started to learn and switched to Linux; Red Hat, Mandrake, uBuntu (what a piece of **** that is), and Mint, then ended up with Microsoft again.

Until someone comes up with a viable alternative to DirectX, I am stuck with MS. Yep, I am a PC gamer......

I'm looking to upgrade my current machine and convert it to a Linux box to play with Linux. I'm currently researching Raspberry Pi stuff for an automation project for my house. I want to set up a sensor to monitor the temperature in the attic and activate an exhaust fan once the temperature reaches a certain setting. It looks doable, I just need to start learning the "ins" and "outs".

I've always been somewhat amazed that Canonical could start with Debian and end up with Ubuntu. It's like giving a perfectly good car to a kid who just got his first toolbox because he's registered for auto shop next semester.

Except that Canonical is incapable of learning from its mistakes.

  • In: Wire a thermostat to the fan and be done with it.
  • Out: Everything more complicated than that.

Yeah, an electro-mechanical setup is a backup plan; however, going the other route is akin to most guys who mod their vehicles.
