The drums might need adjusting.

01''s already have the larger cylinder. The 1500 uses the same part # that a 3500 does. As far as the noise goes I would check the adjustment

thanks for clearing up the cylinder issue... as for the adjustment, i backed the little "star" adjuster down all the way, and it still does it, are the springs just not pulling the shoes back?

Anybody doing this on a truck with a lift kit using lift blocks in the rear, be prepared for wheel hop under heavy braking! I did this modification a few months back, and I'm glad I did! It has saved me from crashing already! I had to slam on the brakes the other day, and I at first couldn't understand why the rear end started bouncing as the truck came to a stop. Then I came to the conclusion that what I was experiencing was leaf spring wrap due to the amount of stopping power my rear brakes have. They didn't lock up, just felt like they were holding, releasing, holding, releasing but so much so that the rear end started softly bouncing. I did stop just in time to avoid a major collision! Thanks to the members of this forum for helping save my truck!!!

  1. Remove the drums and get to the root of the problem.
  2. Ensure the shoes aren't installed incorrectly. I did that the first time.
  3. With the shoes installed properly, they should be adjusted to slightly drag the drum once the drum is reinstalled.

Are you seriously running a TB Spacer? Toss it into the trash!

Not exactly the same improvement ... in '01, Dodge reduced the size of the wheel cylinders for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and then matched the 1/2 tons to them. The cylinder diameter is only 1" ... just 1/16" larger than the 15/16" they used to be. The Chevy 1 ton dually cylinders are 1 3/16" ... a HUGE jump over the original size ... and still a major increase over the "new and improved" '01 series.

Glad to hear you made it out without crashing. So did you use the Dodge 1 ton wheel cylinder with the 1 1/16 inch bore or the Chevy Dually cylinder with the 1 3/16 inch bore? just curious what result people are getting with the different cylinders.

I used the Dodge 1 ton cylinder. Definitely works better than original one, and thank you.

I also did this mod with new drums, shoes, and springs. Now I can feel the truck acually stopping, and the truck stops quicker and shorter. I used a 1999 Dodge 1-ton wheel cylinder.
