Don't gut the muffler. Go ahead and gut the cat. Just don't tell anyone you did it. If your engine is running correctly you shouldn't have any hydrocarbons in your exhaust anyways. If you want to gut the muffler just put on a straight pipe. The only reason you gut the cat instead of removing it is beacuase it is illegal for anyone to remove one.
As far as how to gut all you have to do is cut the exhaust pipe in back of it. THen get a really long scredriver or something similar and bang it around in there. Then drive it around to blow all of the **** out and then repeat.
im not an EPA junky but id suggest just buying a hi-flo cat if i was you, its what i did, because the fine for gettin busted is upwards of $5,000 in some states
It also depends on where you live. Oklahoma from what I know can go full straight on some years. I hada cop crawl under mine and said nothing about it, then turned around and said his old 12V is full straight. I don't know full law for states but unless you live in a city most small towns won't say anything unless you just run and gun and make all the noise you can.
i gutted mine, and love it, didnt make it much louder, what i did was i took my exhaust down and cut the heatshield off, then i cut a big access hole in the cat and took all the crap out, then i jusr rewelded the plate back on, and the heatshield, and bolted her back up. also i ran it through emissions and it passed with flying colors.
see in my case i gained a bit of power in the low end, when i added the round intake like you see all these guys runing i lost alot of lowe end tq, so i went back to stock intake.
