Default Rear diff problems

I've been hearing a clicking noise coming from the rear differential. Took the cover off today, and found this piece of metal. I believe it is a piece of the spring retainer out of the Auburn unit. As you can see, the springs and rest of the retainer have moved toward the opening in the Auburn casing, and it is even sticking out of the casing hole some. You can see how it was rubbing on something as it turns (probably the noise i've been hearing). The Auburn can be rebuilt for about $170, but this seems like a good time to go to 4.56's.

Can you see the pinion at all?
Rotate the carrier slowly and look at both gears.
Look and see if there is any mark or chip on either gear.

Aim4squirrels, it's only clean because I shot it down with brake/caliper cleaner.

Rabbler, there's no marks or chips on any gear tooth. I rotated it and inspected each ring gear tooth, pinion gear tooth, and even the exciter teeth. They are all good. In fact, as you rotate, your also able to see the side gears inside the Auburn, and they seem to look ok too. Won't know for sure on those though until it is out and taken apart. I think where that mark is on the retainer (the part that is sticking out of the casing hole) must be from rubbing on the back of the differential housing. At first, I thought it must be rubbing on the pinion gear, but it has no marks on it at all. Can't see the back wall of the differntial housing.

That Auburn was installed in May of 2005. Not exactly a recent install, but not real old either.

Oh come on man, you know all of your stuff is just always sparkly clean. It does suck though. The 4:56's will be fantastic with those 35" tires.

Without pulling the whole assembly out, I don't know if you'll know for sure exactly what it is. Looking at that piece though, it appears to have a slight curve to it and notches upward, correct?

Im thinking you're probably on the right track with a the spring retainer. It looks as though the whole unit is twisting inside the housing.

That sucks that you'll have to get that thing rebuilt, What's the warranty on that Auburn Unit?

Silver--if you do decide to go with the 4.56's what would you do with your 4.10's ?

That wouldn't have happened with a tru-trac

Oh well that's not a very exepensive rebuilt. Glad you found yourself and excuse to get new gears (4.88)
