To be honest 01DodgeRam360, I kindof agree with Indy's point. I think had you not been so hard on the truck, you probably wouldn't have had as many issues as you are having. I would never take a 98,000 mile truck and thrash it the way you did. Your just asking for trouble. Does that mean that all the damage was caused by you - no. But it certainly didn't help i'm sure. Just my opinion, don't get all upset about it.
I don't know that I disagree here either but it's kind of like a pot calling a kettle black.

Here just happens to be one of Indy's videos of him doing the exact same thing he always tried to talk bad about 01DodgeRam360 for.

Yeah, but his truck has alot of new parts in it andhe's not spinning 35 inch mud tires either. Besides he knows how to diagnose a problem and repair it if he breaks something. Hell it cost him less to rebuild his truck after that fire than neon's header install cost. You can't afford to break **** when you don't have any money and you don't know how to fix anything, or even if something needs fixed.

Back on topic, I think you would be okay to use the housing you have now and throw an open differential in it. Worst case senario is you grenade the entire differential, and you have to replace it anyway. Which is what you were already going to do this time.

I think so too. I really do not have much to loose at this point.

In regards to Indy...I don't care if he knows how to work around a truck, there are a ton more to life than just working a wrench (money, women, education)....nothing excuses his conduct. The man has the nerve to jump on every thread I have an put in his homosexual zingers when I'm dealing with serious crap, it's just plain rude and immature. Sure, everyone knows I did a couple stupid things with the truck, and I'm sure I sped it up a little, but this truck was beaten by the previous owner, not me. I saved this truck. Besides, I think a few burnouts is much safer than slamming my truck through mud up to the foglights...I don't mud, so it's a substitution. Anyways besides the side bull**** I'm dealing with, I thnik your right. Slap the parts back in, make it an open carrier, throw some thick oil in there, and if it goes it goes, but I'd rather try then spend $1000 on a new rear end...

No offence to you but this is a good example to ANYONE looking into a rig, car, heck boat and motorcycle to have it checked by a mechanic before purchase!

I had my truck check in and out before I bought it. That was my cost but then I had a small list and brought it back to the dealer and lowered the price and got it all fixed! Except my cat...they said it was going out...4 years later still good!

Anyway good luck.

I just called over there. I told him I wanted a quote to put the parts back into, change the carrier to an open, and to put the thickest of oil in it. I told him I have nothing to loose. If it goes, I'd only be back to where I am now but with a little extra time to save money up. You could tell he was a little bummed, but I know we hit it right on the money. If I do wind up having to get a new rear end, so what? It's goingto come with all the parts anyways, so even if the parts I have now get shredded up who gives a ****, I'll have more time to save money up. Chances are, it's going to be fine too. Thick oil, open carrier, sounds good to me. I'm gettiing a quote from them today. And if it'scheap enough, I'll give them a green light, and get my god damn truck back on the road. Thanks again guys for the advice.

Hey 01360, I think you shoud check this out. It's so easy a caveman can do it...

I thought you should read it in order to get an idea of what's invloved in working with differentials. It's not too complicated, all you need really when it comes to tools is a socket set and ratchet, a torque wrench, a slide hammer for removing outer wheel bearings, hammer, screwdrivers, and some lube. Not too much when it comes to an investment if you already have most all of the above and can save you quite a bit in labor costs when you use them over and over again.

Edit: alomost forgot to mention feeler guage and plastiguage to measure tolerances.

I'm not saying to go take your truck and rebuild the rear end yourself, I'm just giving this link as something to remember for future reference.

I cant say that you dont make a point, but like cerial killer said...I have no problem fixing whatever breaks. Shoot, I just broke a valve spring today trying to get my ****ing kickdown to work right, and Im done in an hour... so, its not like the pot calling the kettle black. I built my truck to do that sort of thing, he didnt. 190 000 miles and no major issues that arent fixed in a days time, aside from the fire of course.

i dont know of any homosexuial zingers iv made... you immagine a lot

anyways im not going to keep this off topic any longer. good luck getting it back on the road.

Indy I don't even know why you are apart of this thread. It's guys like you that make my threads so ****ing long. You just come in to bitch and be a homo, either help out, or stay out...that simple.

Now guys, these guys are being complete losers. I told him I wanted to give it a shot and put the pieces back in, and buy an open carrier. He told me he doesn't know where to find an open carrier, and that the one from the dealer is $796!! These guys are being complete drama queens, they are just trying to make everything a big crisis. They know I've got them in a bind now. I told him I have nothing to loose. If this idea doesn't work, so what? At least it will give me some time to pay for a new rear end right? So where can I find an open carrier for this truck, and how much am I looking at? These guys aren't trying at all to get me out of their shop cheap. I plan to get the truck towed somewhere else, but I need to find a cheap open carrier for this truck, and then have somebody install it along with the other parts, put some thick oil in it, and ride it. IF it goes, so what, and if it doesn't, then we were all right. But I need help, I don't know where to find an open carrier for this axle, and these guys are just trying to **** me over obviously...
