What?
I'm not really sure why your calling me a punk? I just got done translating what you guys said to me. I'm keeping the axle, I'm putting the parts back in, I'm bringing it to a different shop. I just need an open carrier....I don't see where the disconnect is??

Ohh, ok. I wasn't sure why he was snapping me all of a sudden.
I got a Dodge because I love the truck, but let's face it, a transmission and a rear end having problems at 100,000 is unheard of. If I didn't like my truck, I wouldn't have put a transmission into it, so obviously I enjoy it enough to get over it.
I don't know why people think I'm supposed to be some seasoned veteran on this ****. This is all new to me. I haven't even owned my own truck for a year yet, I'm sure learning a lot. People enjoy patting themselves on the back and picking on me, but hey whatever floats your boat..
I'm looking for people here as always that are nice people always, and don't expect more than a thank you and respect for giving out advice. Others believe I should lick their nuts for advice even when they are ******** to me. I'm not going to kiss anyone's *** that is an ******* to me, I'm a grown man, I don't lick anyones nuts, only people I respect..
Slomojo, let me know when you can if you can send me out an open carrier from that axle. I will let the truck sit until I can find an open carrier. Then, when I get it, I'll just have them install it, put the differntial back together, and then cross them out like I have New England Transmission. Anybody else that can assist me in finding a cheap open carrier for my axle, and can get it quick for me would be extraordinarily appreciated. I must get this truck back on the road, I can't afford to let it sit. I figure I'm out at least a week to two weeks at this rate. Thank you all. I"'d really hope people can choose what they want to do. Help me out, or just leave me alone, it's the bickering that makes these threads so long...

I know you are frustrated about all this but I have owned fords (btw 88 to 94 are notorious for rearends going bad) and chevys and they all have bad points and trucks that seem to have more problems. Your truck is modified and who knows how it was treated before you got it so 100,000 is maybe not too bad. Take mikecjn's advice and call the places he recomends and go from there.

Ugh...you're killing me 360...
If your truck drove in there it should drive back out...Go somewhere else.
You have the crappiest luck as far as shops go. I don't who is recommending them to you but you need to start researching the shops prior to taking anything in to anyone.
As you know, I also live in Maine and have nowhere near the same luck as you.
Have you tried calling Archies Offroad out of Wells at all? Start calling around for parts locally and stay away from the NE Transmission's and look for someone who specializes in what you need done...
You may look like a jackass sometimes going into a shop and asking advice but in the long run it is your cash at stake. Hell, when I snapped my #4 sparkplug off I asked advice here on the easiest way to get it out and then went to Napa, VIP, and 2 garages in Arundel and Kennebunk and bounced the ideas off of them and got some more pointers prior to pulling it out. By doing that you also can tell what kind of people they have working there and whether they just want you money or really know what they are doing...

I really am not sure. I have never dealt with them butpass by their store everyday...they should at least be able to point you in a direction if they don't carry it.
Another place in Wells is Precision Transmission. Guy at the shop there loaned me a tool for a repair I did on my own...showed me he wasn't money hungry because he knew I wasn't bringing my vehicle to him but he lent me the tool with no questions asked anyway.
I gotta run my work truck up to Don Fosheys in S. Portland tomorrow morning for an inspection and I will see if he has any ideas and if possible, time permitting I will swing thru Archies. Just not sure what time I will be done. I think they may have to do brakes and stuff to my work truck for inspection and with it being a company truck we have all the work done at shops.

01360... This website says that the carriers internals for a LSD and an Open diff are the same but I don't think that that is 100% true.
http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/axle/9_25specs.html
Either one being fully complete should be able to substitute the other but they aren't exactly the same. I've personally had my open diff apart on a bench before and this one from my trailer is a LSD unit. Some of the internals may be the same but the spider gears will not rest properly if the track lock setup is removed to make an open diff out of an LSD. The carrier for the LSD has a retaining area for the clutch discs and clips associated with them that act as thrust washers in an open diff. Remove them and the side gears will not seat properly which won't allow you to go open style without inserting shims to act as spacers. The simplest way that you could make an open diff out of a LSD is by letting the clutches wear out. Once they are completely worn, you'll have what is called a un-limited slip differential.
This site shows the obvious difference between a open and LS differential and explains a few things about them. You should look it over.
http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/traclok.html
I wouldn't worry too much though. Your current setup hasn't caused any serious problems yet so you can just have them put back everything and go from there. The carrier they are trying to sell you is marked up at least $116 and it's probably another LS carrier with no internals which would require you to reuse your old internals (not good seeing as how you LSD is coming apart). I can get a brand new carrier without internals for a LSD for $544 or a brand new open carrier without internals for $177.60 from newmoparparts.com
I also could get a new carrier complete as a mechanical Detroit locking assembly for $613.39 from http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...px?ProdID=2487.
You have quite a few options right now so take your time. The mechanic who is working on your truck is doing things by the book. My local dealer said that they would replace the whole unit to prevent any problems aswell but that's a bit overboard if I may say so myself. You've yet to experience any problems so if it aint broke, why fix it? The complete rear end isn't falling apart, the housing isn's severely scarred, and unless the carrier is cracked, you shouldn't have to worry about any of that. After looking at the internals of my extra diff, I see that the bearings normally rest at least an 1/4" away from that area where your housing has those chips so don't focus on them causing your bearings to not holding true. They're not going to go anywhere unless you pull them and have them replaced.
If you do decide to do anything to that LSD of yours other then put it back together until you can afford to do an overhaul, I would suggest replacing the clutch packs and clips that have started to break apart. They are what are giving you the problems, not the complete rear end, not the housing, and not the carrier. Besides that, the only other thing that I would replace right now would be bearings and seals. The truck is 100,000 miles old and according to that jedi website mentioned above, LSD's have a life of 70,00 miles before the clutches go bad and they start turning into Un-LSDs. If and when the LSD does come apart, if the gears don't get damaged, the only thing left are bearings and seals. So, unless you plan on overhauling the whole rear end unit in the near future, keep that in mind.

roll with the punches, stuff happens to every truck, no matter what brand, and stop being so god damn defensive all the time. and if you did, you may have already had your partbeing shipped to you right now
Ohh and if it makes you feel better, i still have the stock tranny and LSD carrier in my 99 with 170,000 miles

This thread has more drama that a woman on the rag!
I don't know what to say...if it was my truck I'd eaither rebuild ALL of it or scrap it for metal! Way way to much drama!
You think they try to screw cause of your age? Have your Dad bring it in next time...or do research BEFORE you go the shop....back back in the day I use to sell cars...uninformed customers were the best!!! Easy money! :P
