I need help figuring out dodge's timing specs. When installing the distributor, do you bring it up on TDC and point rotor button to #1 on cap? If so, any good way I can make sure that I am on #1 not #6 without pulling valve covers? First time working on dodge, I am used to chevy. It seems that dodge and chevy are the same so far. I just want to get this right before putting motor down in, cause I don't think I can touch the distributor once it is all together and in. I am assuming that dodge is either on #1 or 180 out.

Its the same. You are either number 1 or number 6. If you try to start the engine and it doesn't, move to number 6. But you can move the oil pump drive gear too.

the best way to tell is to pull the #1 plug, put your finger over the plug hole and rotate until you feel pressure on your finger... your now on the compression stroke, continue till tdc and install the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder... once you've done this and have it running, you'll need to get the fuel sync set. it's the timing for the fuel injection...

Except for rocker shafts on pre-magnum engines (LA block) and the timing cover/water pump setup, SB chrysler and SB Chevy are very similar. Same layout, same firing order, etc. If you can wrench on one, you can wrench on the other. It seems that dodge and chevy are the same so far
Thanks guys. Steve am I suppost to point rotor to #1 on cap or #1 cylinder, once on TDC? Also not sure what this means: (you'll need to get the fuel sync set. it's the timing for the fuel injection...) Sorry not used to working on a fuel injected motors. Figured once I got timing right it would run fine.

I know this might sound crazy but if my distrubutor isent on mark one can I just make where it's pointing my number one as long as I move all the wires to that set up or so I have to take the motor out of the truck to fix it ?

Er...yes. Kind of. Where is rotor pointing. There should be a 1 embossed on cap. But if you turn the distributor, ad mentioned in the previous posts, you will have to ahve fuel synch reset.

is the truck currently running? if its running ok, i'd leave it alone. if its not running and the distributor is in the wrong place - then fix it. get it close enough to run and then have the fuel sync set by anyone with a very expensive scanner.
