1996 Dodge Ram 1500. I'm having the low beam headlight problem like others here. I'll change out the switch first and hopefully that will fix my problem. I'm reading where some people are replacing part of the harness as well and it comes with it(from Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone?), or is it extra? Is this plug and play, or is there splicing involved?

^Found my problem. I cleaned up the connector and plugged it back in and all is good for now. Still will probably have to order a new one later. I left my parking lights on at work and I'm guessing that is what caused it to over heat and do the damage.

Default 96 ram 1500

Only my head light went out, the rest worked. had to hold the multy function swith back for the high beams to work. that got me home, but all the suden they worked again until i turnd the lights off, then they did not work again. The multy function swith is not the problem, and i even got lucky and got my money back. Guess i to will try the heavy buty harness, or how do you run it from the battery?

M low beam were out also as posted above. I went to Auto Zone and got the part, and it comes with harnes. Orileys has it also with or with out plug, but you need the plug. Cant remember pin #(h) but both plug and switch were bad. It says on recall#819 to cut bad wires back 10 inches, and solderd. wires all looked good so I cliped off at plug about 1/4 " up,and used buss spices. My guess is that if there is faluer again it will be at the buss splice, but all and all the fix works. Will replie if my fix fails. Recall # 819 has the step by step instructions how to do this. I printed this out.

My 96 1500 has the same problem. I'm going to do the headlamp relay upgrade. I have 2 questions.

My truck has snow plow lighting on the front and top with a switch to go from regular headlights to plow lights. Will there be anything different I need to do?

The instructions for the relay upgrade don't include replacing the headlight switch? Should I?

I understand this is an OLD thread, but I just started putting in my new headlight switch and pigtail. I'm doing fine so far: I've splced
green to green (kinda blue green actually)
black/yellow to black yellow
tan/orange to tan orange
green to green (kinda blue green actually)
and my big wires from the battery and to the headlights.
The problem is that the remaining wires don't color match:
from the original 96 RAM wiring harness, I still have:
green/yellow
pink/black
grey
And from th pigtail, I still have:
black/blue
green/white
light blue
If I were a guessing man, I'd guess the light blue goes with the grey, the gree/yellow goes with the green/white, and that leaves the pink black to go with the black/blue. But when I'm soldering and heat-shrinking, I don't like to guess!

Try a Haynes manual. The wire schematics might shed some light on your issue. Maybe as simple as an option or 2 that you have or don't have.

What year is the switch you are installing? What year is the truck you are installing it in?

welcome to DF.

don't guess. something bad might happen.

see if you can find your wiring diagram in these service manuals. The 01 is in section 8.
