Fluid to the radiator to the top of radiator, out the bottom, to aux cooler, then back to transmission. Someone else stated this as well.
Fluid flows bottom to top, at least on my truck. Always thought that was weird...

Exactly. For some reason I initially thought it went the other way, but when you take a moment and think about it... The check valve is to stop fluid from draining back into the transmission. So, the flow must go towards the radiator.

This seems to be getting confusing. The check valve is located in the line that goes "to" the lower port of the radiator.

The direction of flow is important for people who are doing the external filter. I know what ya mean though.

Alright so after reading this thread it makes more sense of my tranny. someone HACKED mine out and by hacked i mean hacked its a $%$%#% mess and leaks, AND if i cold start and drop it into reverse IT WILL NOT MOVE. i have to drop it in neutral wait a few seconds and then reverse and it goes fine.. shifts fine minus the WOT issue from stock gov. But i still ahve the issue once its warmed up if u drop it in reverse it diesels rpms drop below 300 and it will stall if i'm not quick about what i'm doing.. Makes parking lots a bitch and a half.. think putting one back in might solve my issues?

no.
lack of check valve might allow the fluid in the cooler to drain back into the pan and cause a slow prime, but it has nothing to do with it not running right.

what do you mean by dieseling?
if it doesn't idle right, replace IAC.
if the idle surges up and down, replace TPS.

The 46RE in my TJ has the delay if I don't put it in neutral for a few seconds. Pretty common unfortunately. I also don't have a drainback valve. The purpose of the valve is so the torque converter doesn't drain into the cooler.

You can try to install one to see if it fixed your delay, but it certainly won't have any affect on your runability issue...

it has a brand new IAC, TPS and it didn't change.. and by diesel it idles down and sounds like a chugging diesel while only in reverse. no problems forward motion and it only runs like that after its allowed to warm up. If its a cold start it backs up fine without issue. outside temp is relevant.. it will backup fine at -20 and at 75... once the truck reaches operating temp I have the reverse issues.
