It can clog up over time, and prevent fluid from flowing thru the cooler. Your trans burns up shortly thereafter.

I was lucky enough that the previous that someone prior to me owning this truck has already done this. They simply removed the ball from the check valve so it's a straight shot right through it. I did recently discover that O'Riley's seems to have most of the stuff listed in the OP's post for any without a local NAPA Auto parts like myself.

Right now I'm exploring the possibility of using an external trans cooler with filter and check valve as soon as I can figure out where to get one or a recommended one. I keep seeing posts of people talking about their's but never one of the actual part. Lol

There are several threads around here of folks installing external filters, and such. There may even be one (or more) in the FAQ/DIY section.

I'll do some digging when I get home. The search feature doesn't seem to work for me. Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: Confirmed, the search feature doesn't work for me for some reason. :/

Edit 2: Now it works. >.>

For anyone wanting an external cooler, get the stacked plate style like this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-70274
Not the pipe through the fins style like this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hda-403

I had my transmission rebuilt and the guy put on an external cooler (pipe through the fins) and fluid was getting too hot. He put on the stacked plate style and the temperature was ideal.
He told me that he always pops that check valve out when he rebuilds a Dodge transmission, I'm not sure why he decided to do an external cooler on mine, I guess my radiator wasn't cutting it.

this thread is pretty old but I would like to share something I did, I figured out that the upper trans cooler line for a 97 cherokee works as an alternative to fittings and hose for the delete. Bought the hose off of ebay for 30 bucks and changed it out in about fifteen minutes. Now no more check ball and everything else is still the same.

Thanks for the helpful post. I believe mine must be stuck open, because of slow out of the hole when very cold. Would like it to hold the fluid in t/c, but after reading all the pros / cons, I'll clear the hole so the fluid will flow. I never knew there was a check valve in that system.
Thanks again..

Couple folks make a trans kit, that modifies the valve body, so that it actually charges the T/C in park. Which also means you can now check the fluid in park as well. Sonnax Sure Cure is one, and I believe one of the transgo kits does as well.

Something like this? It dosen't tell you what it does though. Says nothing of charging t/c in park. Maybe I shouldn't buy from EBay many sellers there are not familiar with their products.
