used royal purple 10-30 and k&n filter for awhile.and recently switched to mobil 1 oil and k&n filter and couldnt tell any difference. both oil stays pretty clean. hard to go wrong with either.change my oil always before 5k. i think that is the biggest thing. keeping your oil changed. no matter if its synthetic or dino oil.

but i must say when i opened up my motor for the 1.7 rr change it was super clean inside. no build up at all. and that was on the royal purple. have never used any cleaners or additives.

^^ I change my oil and filter every 6,000. Some guy on the VW Forum I frequent was advocating changing the oil every 1,500, which I said was a waste. But, he is adamant it's the way to go, so if he wants to waste his money like that then who am I to argue.

Anyway, that's the secret. Change the oil regularly to prevent excessive sludge formation or carbon deposits.

That way you know where your leaks are.

charlie. i apologize for not using an exact example. I know people that were running a "heavy" oil close to that and they had to change it to start their car. However it was probably colder than what you experienced because it was in Northern Maine.
