Taking a Trip
From p. 114 of 1998 Ram Pickup Owner's Manual:
When To Lock Out Overdrive--
"When driving in hilly areas, towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, or whenever frequent transmission shifting occurs, press the O/D OFF button. This will improve performance and reduce the potential for transmission overheating or failure due to excessive shifting."

If its doing damage i will fork out he extra cash for gas but if I dont have to at 1.00 a liter I would rather not lol
Wound up taking my brother's F-350 to do the trip. I wasn't going to take my truck up there with that much uncertainty and disagreement coming from the forum and transmission shops. We spent most of the time on the highway in o/d, but when the truck was going up hills or having a hard time moving in o/d, my brother would take o/d out accordingly. His truck had no issue moving at a 65mph clip in o/d, and drove very smoothly. I believe too many people take the o/d subject much too literal. If your towing in the city, it's undeniable that you should take care o/d off. If your in the highway moving at 65-70mph, your not going to be sitting there in 3rd gear with your motor pinned forever, that is plain ignornant. As I said; I'd love to count the amount of guys that pass me on the highway with big trucks with a big load screaming by me in 3rd gear with their RPMs at 3,000 rpms. It's unheard of, and quite frankly, retarded. Again, again, again, I always take o/d off in the city. I always take o/d off on hills, or when the truck is beginning to ask to downshift. But, if my truck is moving right along, without any problems, I am not sitting there with my motor pinned screaming to be shifted.
My old transmission died because of the previous owner. It had 35" tires with 4.10 gearing. And I didn't help the situation by mistaking my truck as a 0-60 race truck. Before my transmission died, I didn't even know what o/d was. Today, I am a much more knowledge and smarter of a driver. Say all you want, but my truck is in tip top condition, and that's because I take care of it.

So... what do the first gen dodges do? They tow at an appropriate speed and do just fine. The debate can go one for ever, but OD was designed for gas mileage, and not for towing. Do what you gotta do.
If your basing my entire intelligence off the subject of o/d; then yes, my intelligence could be debated. Unfortunately, intelligence has nothing to do with transmissions and pickup trucks; that'd be a sad sad world.
i was hoping this thread would die but since it hasn't...
Obviously you have never driven a chevy with a powerglide. 2 gears! your at 4500 rpm cruising at 85! and there were never any significant engine failures (that i know of). and PLEASE stop making us Dodge owners look like push overs! you should have told your brother you were taking your truck and the o/d is gonna be off. period.

He respects my truck. For a 1500, it's got massive nuts. But, an F-350 is an F-350. If he was willing to use his truck, I wasn't going to complain. We're going back up there in a couple weeks. We dropped our yamaha tri-moto off up there to be repaired, so we'll take the big ram up there to go get that cute little 3 wheeler.
Last time i checked i was responding in a thread about o/d usage, so yes, of course i am referring to your intelligence based on the subject that you started. It's irrelevant to bring your actual intelligence level to light in this thread because it does not pertain to anything we're discussing. So whenever someone disagrees with you, the answer is, unfortunately I'm intelligent. Well, go to sylvan.com and become a tutor then and your intelligence will be praised. on dodgeforum.com your intelligence is based on exactly that, dodges.
and it just happens that we actually emptied the bins at the time

Dodge Forum or not, I'm not an idiot. Even if my intelligence is being based exclusively about trucks, it's not still not ignorant. I've learned a lot from this forum, and through trial and error, and have become a very responsible and knowledgable truck owner. I get sick when I have to be a passenger with people and see how poorly the typical driver gives two ****s about their vehicle (like throwing it in reverse and then putting it into drive as its still moving backwards lol). I had a simple disagreement about the o/d debate. It wasn't even the whole o/d debate, just a portion of the debate I was dubious of....and for whatever reason, that supposedly translates to cocky, arrogant, and already having a built in idea before I even get an answer. Call me a jerk all you want; but I have NEVER started anything with anybody on this forum, nor have I ever critized somebody.
