Taking a Trip
the impression i always got was that od was a top gear designed for gas mileage only. since your towing, like others said, turn the od off. This precaution can only help your truck. running at 2500 or so rpms will be just fine.
Yup don't tow in overdrive. 75 is pretty fast to be going with a trailer also. You said in the last post you would do 65 instead. That's more around where I'd stay. Not that I've not done faster than that with a trailer but 75 is sort of fast.
I SPEAK FROM 1ST HAND EXPERIENCE
o/d off while towing
years ago
i blew my tranny towing 2 sleds on the highway at 65 in o/d
$2300 later... i learned my lesson
btw after that iv towed many many times at 65 with the o/d off
even tow my 6000lbs camper at 60-65, with no overheating issues
with my 99, 2500

And another thing, where does the engine make horsepower?? Hmm?? 1800 rpm or 3-4k rpm? Ever been in a truck? Ever been in a 2-ton? Towing engines need to be at peak power rpm. There's absolutely nothing wrong with running the engine at 3k rpm. Heck, it will probably thank you for it. Geez louise. . .
I traveled 75mph with my father's truck with no problems. Remained stable the entire time. The only reason I traveled at 75mph was to make sure it wouldn't keep popping in and out of overdrive. I have no problem traveling at 65mph with o/d off. I just wanted to make sure it's something that other guys do, and that it's not going to be abusive on my engine. What I do know is that it's going to be on obnoxiously loud ride up there. I like overdrive because its usually when my ears can take a break (for the most part). I've told my brother about taking o/d off on the way up, and he already just wants to take his F350 now. Nobody wants to be in a loud truck for 3 hours straight.
Thanks for the info.
