My uncle has a '96 1500 with the 318, 115,000 and 2wd. He had a spark plug break off inside the head, and had to drill it out, but was careful not to get any metal in the cylinder (the only part left inside before he drilled were the threads.)

Subsequently, he drove it for about 5 miles, then the oil pressure dropped to 0 and it started ticking. Stopped, turned it off, and checked the oil. Oil level is fine. Started it up and it was able to build about 20 PSI at idle, then as soon as he gives it gas pressure drops and it starts ticking again. He thinks the strainer is plugged up, or the pump is bad. Either way the oil pan has to come off.

Anyone have a write up for an oil pump replacement on a 2wd 1500? What all has to be done to remove the oil pan?

Sounds like he wasn't as careful as he thought he was if the pickup is clogged with stuff.

 

i belive you have to jack the motor up enough to drop that oil pan.

No lift needed. Engine stays put. Tie the new gasket to the pan with string in the four corners and then start all the pan bolts. Before tightening the pan snug, cut the strings and pull them out so they don't wick the oil out. Sounds like the pump's had it. I chose to go with a melling High volume unit. Won't know for certain until you pull the pan, but hopefully it's not the pump shaft that goes into the disty.

 

You did it to your's aim? My uncle told me that his Haynes manual said the engine had to be lifted, that's good to know. How much was the high volume pump? Where did ya get it? Got a part number?

 

the haynes manuel says you have to lift the motor but you don't. the high volume pump is about 60 bucks. check summitracing.com or kragen. Now would be a good time to also do the rear main seal. Since you have 115,000 miles on your truck, you might as well do the rear main seal. It's only $40 more and less of a headache since you have the pump off.

 

Oh , sorry for the wrong info , I didnt know you could take the pan off without moving the motor. How much of a biotch is it to do while its in place, My rear main seal i suspect of leaking a little , becuase theres oil resude between tranny and motor , on the bottom. But my oil level hasnt droped even a signle drop ( i check it daily) and my tranny fluid is pretty steady. At that time im probally going to swap out for a new oil pump while im in there anyway.

 

I did not have to touch the engine, had to remove the starter and tranny braces though.

I think the high volume was $47 or so at AZ IIRC. Just make sure its a Melling.
