Unless you've been driving through deep water, or spend a buttload of time in 4wd you can probably skip the front one. Although if you've never done them before it wouldn't hurt to do both.

 

I have changed it before, shortly after I did the rear. It makes me feel better changing both at once.

 

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say you don't fill that thing up with a high end synthetic like amsoil?

plain old john deere gear oil, cant remember the last time it was changed, but a barrel of john deere gear oil costs like at least 400 or so dollars

Royal Purple is good, but damn expensive!!! At the price of Royal Purple and K&N filters, it is way better to use Amsoil and change my oil every year! I use Valvoline or Pennzoil synthetic from Walmart and NAPA Gold filters now. Behold the $26 DIY oil change! Although, someday I would like to switch everything over to Amsoil, become a preffered customer, then become a dealer, and then open a good, local auto parts store so I can stay home and hump my bitches.
