Default Engine question on my ram

Hi, i have a 96 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 motor..... i want to rebuild a motor in my spare time to drop in the truck later, problem is i have never rebuilt a motor and this is how i plan to learn like everthing elese i do , i need to know what motors will bolt into my stock setup (5.9 liter). I want more power so thinking an older 360 rebuil or a 340 small block ?? will the newer hemi 5.7 liters fit in my truck ?

thanks

p.s anyone know what my rear end gears might be , stock . It will take posi sometimes in dirt ect.. ?

A 2.2l 4cylinder from a Chevy S-10 will fit. Point there is that anything fits.

You cannot use an older LA small block engine. They are not the same as our Magnum engines. My advice is to go to a junkyard and get a 360 out of a 96 Ram, Dakota, Grand Cherokee, Ram Van, whatever and re-build that. If you are building for torque, I'd stroke it out to 408 or 426 ci.

Hemis are overrated. Too much wiring to make it run right.

For the gears, look at the sticker on the hood, right next to the latch.

What do you mean by "stroke it out" .....specifically.
Is there any differnt heads that will bolt on to increase proformance as well .

Increase the stroke of the engine.

Iron Ram heads from Hughes Engines are great heads. They also sell stroker kits.

Ok so i find an old 5.9L motor and strip it and dip it, and bore it ... aside from the aftermarket heads what else can i do for proformance .... the cam ...i know nothing about it, what type cam would be best , racing cam maybe ? or something in between ? I want more power / torque but also don't want a 10 mile to the gallon rig.

This is my rig , she is getting a suspension lift in the near future ..now has 3" body lift. I did the body work myself (first attempt) welded in cab corners, rockers, box panels...and i learned most of it on an autobody forum ! Similar to the way i'm learmning about engines right now on this forum.

Well my 5.9 is tuff as hell but doesn't seem to turn my 33" tires strong enough...a few nights ago i was out playing in 1 foot of wet snow , the rims were full of snow and the undercarrage a bit...this bogged the old girl down termendously...she was straving for power ...anyway i would guess 100 hp over stock might do it for me ...which would be what ??
