You can get a 3815 on ebay for 150-200$.
True, both have same basic tunes. The difference is internet updateability. the 3815 is updateable via usb cable. The 3715 has to be sent into SC. Hence why 3815 's tend to be a little more money.

I'd still get a confirmation from the seller, but I believe that is the 3715. Its definitely not the 3815.

From oldest to newest, the 3715:

That is a 3715. And even though he may swear its vin unlocked, it isn't. It will have to go to SC to be unlocked. Add 50-75 depending on shipping Florida(SC HQ) if you buy it.

I know with my 3815, all I had to do was return the truck to stock and it becomes unlocked. I sold it to a gentleman in Minnesota, and he was able to use it just fine. Does the 3715 not operate the same way, Twisted_Metal?

Apperently not Jason, I did the ebay route for a 3715 that was "garenteed" to be unlocked. Long story short, after 2 calls to SC's tech line they said in order for it to work with my truck it would have to be sent back to them to unlocked. For a cost of 69.995 plus shipping to Florida. The 3815, has this earlier flaw corrected. Also in a worse case scenario, since the 3815 can be hooked to the internet. SC can have you download a "restore" program to unlock the unit.

Kents, yes you can plug it in the OBD2 port under the dash, and it will turn on. If you try to do any programming it will not allow it if it is VIN locked. The unit will let you know pretty much right away if you can or can't use it on your truck.

That is the first time i've heard that when a 3715 is not vin locked that it still has to be sent back. it sounds like Twisted Metal got screwed imho... when they told him it was not vin locked when it really was. Either way kentsboots, hop into the 3rd gen section and pm sil (think his username is silshemi or something like that). If there is anyone who would be able to tell you for sure, it would be him.

Edit

Here is the thread, think he is the second or third poster

i pmed him and this was his reply

Kent,

If I were you, I would look for a used 3815. This way if you need an update to run your trucks calibration, it can be done without sending it in for service. Just make sure under the tuner status screen it says unlocked and call Superchips customer service to verify the tuner serial number is not stolen.
